Frankly led bulbs are gimmicky at this stage, when you compare the lumens output with the traditional energy saving bulb, the watts rating is only slightly less and the cost of the led bulbs are about three to four times. Can't really also vouch for the longevity of the bulbs either as they are yet to be proven. It is the way forward but I don't believe that your electricity bills would be cut drastically from their use.

I notice that Cree is included in the more expensive products. I'm getting a battery powered LED lanterns which uses Cree bulbs.
I'll be using it in case the power goes out. With so many things going wrong in Spore, it's better to have an emergency plan

I find the brand very important, those branded LED bulbs like Philip okay but those cheaper no brand ones bought from China website spoil easily....

Common for people to have a torch on standby. I have at least 2 in case the fuse trips. A LED lantern is just more suitable if you need light over a wider area. If we have a blackout thieves are going to have a hard time getting to my place because the elevators won't be working.

A smart thief would target the dark homes which are probably empty & not the lighted ones which indicate there people around

No, not made in China no good but there must be some brand for quality assurance. I test a few from China website no brand ones burnt out very fast after put into covered downlight, i think their technology or quality no good so the LED bulb temperature very high and burnt out fast. The branded ones okay but best to use them in uncovered lamps for long lasting usage...

Adopting the new E27 socket is troublesome:(
Have to bring in an electirician to replace all my light fixtures, may have to do repainting, getting all the new bulbs,...

I would only consider doing it if I'm doing a renovation. A less troublesome solution is to get an LED desk lamp.

maybe you can buy ceiling lamps from Ikea very cheap like $19.90 for something like this, should be able to cover your existing round tube ceiling lamp marks and no need to repaint...smaller ones only $3.90 and nice looking...

The last time I went looking into electrical stores asking about using LED I didn't have much luck. Seems like there are now more options available. I'll take another look.

For my parents place, I went to Ikea n bot the circular ceiling lamps ($3.90). Inside is E27 socket. Put in Philips 10W n they work fine.

Bro Johnny, LED is good technology but still expensive compare with other forms of lighting. I have a few solar charged LED lamps in my garden. Not as bright as what I wanted but good enough to see.

Agree with some bros, the brightness from LED still long way to go. In terms of power consumption, I really dont know. My garden is well lighted with solar LED lamps.

I have read that blue LEDs might be damaging to the eyes. Powerful LEDs can also dazzle e.g. powerful LED headlights used in cars.

bluish white light (cool white) does not disperse light efficiently as yellowish white light (warm white).

I think what's going on with LED is that the technology is maturing as more people are adopting it. As a result it is becoming cheaper because of mass production. Same thing happened to DVD. Early adopters paid $700+ for the players & $60 for the movies. Nowadays both the players & film are very affordable as they have become mainstream technologies.
