Data haul by Android Flashlight app 'deceives' millions

_71573052_018004628-1.jpg

The "brightest flashlight" app was downloaded to millions of Android devices

Tens of millions of Android users have been "deceived" by a developer who covertly gathered personal data, the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said.

GoldenShores Technologies took ID and location data from the millions using its Brightest Flashlight app.

The developer shared the data with ad networks but did not tell users about this practice, an FTC statement said.

To settle the charges, GoldenShores has agreed to give users more control over what happens to their data.

In its statement, the FTC criticised GoldenShores for its poor privacy policy, which did not let people know that the app was logging their precise location and a unique identifier for their phone and was then sharing that information with advertisers.

'Left in the dark'

Although the free app offered people an opt-out clause, the FTC said this was "meaningless" because data from all users of the Brightest Flashlight app was shared whether they agreed or not.

"When consumers are given a real, informed choice, they can decide for themselves whether the benefit of a service is worth the information they must share to use it," said Jessica Rich, director of the FTC bureau of consumer protection, in a statement.

"But this Flashlight app left them in the dark about how their information was going to be used," she added.

A settlement deal signed by GoldenShores tightens up its privacy policy and demands that the company change how it handles data. In particular, it must no longer misrepresent how it gathers data and whom it is shared with, and must give consumers meaningful control over what is done with the information.

In addition, it must delete all the data it previously gathered from those who downloaded the Flashlight app.

Me. I downloaded it a few days ago before your warning came up.

What should I do now?

I made my switch from iphone to Samsung and I'm regretting it.

1. Sound quality lousier than iphone.
2. Typing is difficult compared to iphone.
3. Lanjiao background apps draining the battery.
4. Charged 100%, wake up morning only left 80%

I guess I'm just not suitable to be a vegan :(

Yeah, this was the missing thing they needed. It's a good update. I hope apple comes up with a smartphone as big as note 3 and I'll switch back to apple. Got the note 3 for the large screen. Old liao, cannot stand the small screen... :D

I don't like the stylus. It's like an additional penis which I don't need.

I also don't like Samsung's Touchwiz UI skin... too bloated.

My note has lots of background apps eating up battery power. Lately it seems that apps or the pictures have taken up the phone memory I have an external ss card but I didn't want to save it to my ss card as the previous card became unreadable and needed a reformat to work again so all the data will be lost searched for it and found out that oh yes sometimes Samsung phones can cause the sd card to malfunction. The camera function is better than the iPhone though

The stylus pen is only pulled out only when I need to dig my ears :D

Its been 3 weeks now and I still do not like the phone. Might just go and get a iphone 5 and sell this off.

Regardless of a person 's diet, stupidity can be sensed by anyone.

Stupidity is when a person cannot differentiate the difference between scapegoat and scrap goat. :D

Yes, camera is better. My wife is using iphone 5 and she commented that the note camera is better. The other problem is, I have never exceeded my 3gb data plan when I was using iphone but the note eats up the data plan pretty fast. In the end, I just make an effort to check my data usage every few days.
