Singapore may have thrived in the 14th century but by the time my grandparents arrived in Singapore, all that was left was swampland and a few fishing villages.

I should know because I grew up in Singapore and used to cycle all over the Island.

Apart from the areas which were occupied by the Ang Mohs, the rest of the country was in ruins.

LKY changed all that. He turned the whole Island into a modern metropolis. I am forever grateful to LKY for his leadership and foresight.

I can't remember the text, but I have read somewhere that there was already a chinese settlement in Bukit Timan when Raffles landed. Apparently they were growing durians. However there must have been a lot more activity in Peesai in the ancient days. Sentosa was a pirate hideout and Temasek's location has always been a stopover destination for east-west voyages. But for present time education, civilization here started after lau Lee came into power.

We talk you of the 14th century, which meant the century which ended with 1400.
As in that article,

The Chinese mindset wasn't to settle and colonize, they were interested in trading only. The "privateers" among the Chinese who left the motherland and settled elsewhere must have been unhappy with their situation in the homeland and took the risk to go somewhere else for a better life. There is an interesting book entitled "Sons of the Yellow Emperor" tracing the Chinese diaspora out of China (can't remember the author's name, a Chinese girl born in Borneo and settle in London.) ChengHe's naval expeditions were expensive and the court cut expenses in order to concentrate on the Great Wall as his early expeditions proved that there were no "civilized peoples" to trade with as far a the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. Those days under wind power, it was a long way off already. Oz would have been closer, but they never made it there as well.
