ATHENS — Greece has set up its first “drug consumption” room to contain a surge of infectious diseases among drug addicts in the crisis-hit country, Greece’s Organisation Against Drugs (OKANA) said yesterday (Nov 25).

Following similar projects in Western Europe, Canada and Australia, the centre lets users inject drugs they bring themselves, under medical supervision, and has been visited by more than 200 addicts since it was set up in October.

“Demand is increasing day after day and we believe that very soon we may need more facilities in other parts of the city,” said Mr Sakis Papaconstantinou, the head of OKANA which runs the centre.

Greece has slashed health spending as part of austerity measures prescribed by international lenders in exchange for funds that have helped it stay afloat.

Many of its estimated 25,000 drug users are homeless and have no access to healthcare services in a country where unemployment has soared to over 27 per cent, affecting mainly young people, in a six-year recession.

The number of HIV-infected drug users rose sharply at the height of the crisis in 2011-2012, according to OKANA, as needle-sharing led to higher exposure to infections — such as HIV and Hepatitis B and C. The drug consumption room is also aimed at reducing fatal overdoses.

Since 1986, more than 90 drug consumption rooms have been set up in Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Luxembourg, Norway, Canada and Australia.

Representatives from the Council of Europe’s drug policy network, meeting in Athens this week with drug policy experts from the Greek government and other European countries, called for immediate political action to mitigate the impact of drug abuse in austerity-hit countries.

“Let’s not sacrifice drug treatment at the altar of austerity,” said Mr Panos Kakaviatos, spokesman of the Council of Europe, an inter-governmental body which plans to issue a call to all governments to provide resources for drug treatment. REUTERS

If our Government is not strict on DRUGS AND ABUSERS, we would be in the same situation as Greece and other European countries. The problem is enormous and the drain on medical cost is astronomical!

We should always be thankful to our Government for their strict, pragmatic and enlightened policies.

Could gambling habit of LKY's father has anything to do with him saying casinos would be allowed in Singapore only “over my dead body.”?

In one of LKY's book:

Lee's gambling habit put strains on his relationship with his wife. He would gamble at the Chinese Swimming Club and at times return home in an angry mood, demanding jewellery from his wife to pawn for more funds to continue.
Note: Lee is Lee Chin Koon, father of Lee Kuan Yew

For whatever reason only known to old fart himself, he started to build not one, but two casinos.

It is no different from a person whose love ones abuses drug, but he himself has became a drug lord just because of money.
So, is such person a man of integrity and great man worthy of praises?

Only blind and retarded sycophants are singing praises of old fart.

Totally agree.

Gratitude and respect to the CONIPMANB cannot be misplaced. It is totally blind, retarded and foolish.
Blind gratitude to the Master and the Creator is plain servitude.
Blind respect for the Master's Voice is the greatest enemy of truth.

Your Pappy gov is getting this drug problem from the m&ds they so sheltered with welfare benefits, causing a drain not only to the national resources, medical cost, rehabitative cost, prison cost and ultimately translate to inflation cost of the coffin you soon need.
