SINGAPORE - A Singaporean who has been on the run since 1991 was in the Subordinate Courts yesterday to answer armed robbery charges.

Low Sze Song was believed to have been arrested when he tried to re-enter Singapore via Woodlands Checkpoint last Thursday. A warrant of arrest for Low, now 61, had been issued after he fled the country more than 20 years ago.

According to court documents seen by The Sunday Times, Low is accused of robbing Nan Yi Jewellers of $276,000 worth of gold ornaments on April 5, 1991, with an accomplice named Steven Ang Keng Leong. Official records show that the jewellery store, located in North Bridge Road, shut its doors permanently in 2004.

Ang was found guilty of the robbery in September 1991 and sentenced to 10 years in jail and 24 strokes of the cane.

The court on Saturday ordered Low to be remanded in police custody for further investigations.

The case against him will be heard on Friday.
