Bus 190: Mission Impossible

Just at the bus stop outside Thong Teck Building, I had to skip bus 190 for 13 times before being finally able to board it at the 14th bus...1 hr 40 mins later on Friday, 4 Oct.

According to a passenger I talked to, this is common, and it gets worse during weekends and holidays.

As Singapore gets more and more overcrowded, this inconvenience will be inevitable, more dangerous (watch the whole thing to see why) and become the new normal of the future (actually now)...pretty detrimental to our overall economic and mental productivity.

Find out at the end, whether you agree or not...

*To those asking why not I take an alternative mode of transport & yadda dadada, here are my reasons:

The purpose of the video is not just about me per se. It's to show how inconvenient it is to take the bus of your choice.

If I were to go off like that (which I could), would any of you even know this incident is a common affair? Would anyone understand what it was like for the commuters who stuck through with me (esp. the Aunty in orange t-shirt) to know how frustrating this is?

Bus 190 has long been a problematic, crowded bus and it's time this has to be addressed (long overdue). This also applies to many other buses in Singapore that take the popular routes.

Also, consider those who are disabled, the elderly and those with children. Switching buses or MRT stations can be an inconvenience for these ppl, sometimes very impossible. With a direct bus to their homes (most commuters at this bus stop live in CCK and Bukit Panjang), it's a regular choice they make. Can you imagine how much an agony this is for them to go through daily?

Did I wave for a taxi during that time? Oh yes, I did indeed (not shown in video as focus was on the bus instead), and that wasn't easy since many of them had the 'Busy' sign on (it's a Friday after all).

The right questions you should ask are:
- Why should the incident even be allowed in the first place?
- Why can't people have the right to their first choice of transport mode?
- Why can't commuters have the right to a comfortable and spacious transport if they don't want to board an overcrowded bus which is suffocating and dangerous?
- How about people like parents with children, the elderly and the disabled who cannot afford to go through the agony of changing multiple stations just to get to their destinations (which is also more expensive)?
- If we just sweep problems under the carpet or use imperfection as an excuse, we will start to grow comfortable in incompetence and never improve. How can we even progress as a society if we allow this to fester?
- What rights do we have to call ourselves a First World country if we can't address such a problem like this?

Crumbling are the days in Singapore where taking transport is a straight-forward routine.

Short-way trips added to bus service to ease overcrowding: SMRT

POSTED: 18 Oct 2013

Transport operator SMRT said 24 short-way trips have been added to bus service 190 to ease overcrowding since mid-2012, and it would inject additional short-way trips where necessary.

SINGAPORE: Transport operator SMRT said the passenger load of bus service 190 has risen steadily over the past year.

Following a video shot by a frustrated bus commuter that went viral, SMRT said on its Facebook page that it has added 24 short-way trips to ease overcrowding since mid-2012.

The commuter who shot the video missed a total of 13 buses (service 190) along Orchard Road on October 11.

The commuter finally managed to board the 14th bus, an hour and 40 minutes later.

In the video, some commuters were seen boarding the bus from the back door as passengers at the front of the bus were not moving in to allow others to board.

SMRT said bus passenger loads, particularly on Friday evenings, continue to be heavy and added that it would inject additional short-way trips where necessary.

SMRT said some of these trips were added under the Bus Service Enhancement Programme.

SMRT said it will continue to monitor the situation closely.

It appealed to passengers to move to the rear so that others may board the bus.

He can take a taxi, right?

Taxi...ha ha ha....all sorts of incentive for them, not to pick you off the streets...ha ha ha, you are right can take taxi, can buy a car..can use 'bus number 11"...

Where is "tuck you" ( pronounced with a "f"), with him holding a copy of the MY PAPer??...publicity stunt lah!...he should try taking this service 190 or trying to take the trains at 8.15am in the morning, or try going to Jurong East MRT Station etc...

Don't inform the media clowns...on his own...with his copy of MY PAPer...:p

Fucking long winded just to say public transport system is overloaded.

FUCK PAP.
FUCK FUCK FUCK :oIo::oIo::oIo: PAP.

Who did the Commuter vote for?

This problem is not isolated to 190. The frequency for this bus is higher than average.

What about other buses that come on 15 to 20 minute interval, only to be packed like cigarettes in a box?

SMRT shouldn't take the easy way and blame the people for not moving in. Have they realize that if people packed themselves shoulder to shoulder, it ends up creating another new problem - people can't get out if they need to alight.

I do not think the writer is demanding or spoiled. If the PAP expects a perfect mandate, they better have a perfect solution.

He can take a taxi, right?

Even Hongkongers don't use taxis to solve transport problems. I don't think this is the best PAP can do, since they have all the perfect mandate, unobstructed to solve the problem, unlike the HK government.

SMRT has marshalls station in bus stops at Bukit Panjang every morning to 'assist' commuters in boarding buses like 190 and 960. I have never witness anything like this in my entire life. The same thing is happening everyday at the CCK LRT station

At the other ministry, Mr Khaw is creating more problems for Mr Lui. He is busy clearing forests in this part of the island for his flats and condos. My old Keat Hong Camp has been there for donkey years and he leveled it in record breaking time to make way for more flats.

There can only be one MRT/LRT track and just so many buses on the road at anyone time. If Mr Lui said he can solve the problem, he will probably need to lodge a complaint against Mr Khaw and he better make sure he gets re-elected and stay at the same ministry for at least the next 4 elections.

Does those who plan buses take buses themselves daily?

Anyone who takes public transport knows the overcrowding problem. This does not included the MPs & the directors of these transport companies who are isolated in their ivory towers.

One thing that might improve the situation is to force these people & their families to take "public transport". There is nothing like self interests to motivate change;)

The most expensive govt in the world, supposedly the best that money can buy, couldn't foresee the overcrowding problem when they squeezed an additional one million people onto this little island.

Apparently, those shit-for-brains believe that underground cities or more/taller flats will solve the problem. Listen up you dickheads: people need to travel within the country, to move from point A to point B. They do it for work, for school, for pleasure. Doesn't matter how they do it: public transport, cycling or driving.

More people = more congestion during commute.

It is like filling a balloon with water. After a while the balloon surface starts to feel the tension and then the balloon bursts.

You need a bigger balloon (land), or less water (people).
