Six men were on Monday given either five or six year jail terms plus at least four strokes of the cane each for their roles in a brutal clash that left a 52-year-old unemployed victim dead two days later.

The men are Anandraj Manimaran and S. Karthikesu, both 21; twin brothers Muhizin Khan and Segu Jamaldeen Nafil Mohamed, and Suriya Thankamany, all 20; and Abdul Samad Mohamed Kasim, 25.

They had punched and kicked Mr Goh Ho Leong at Tiong Bahru Park in March 2011 after a dispute in a public toilet there and continued to do so even after he fell. This left their victim with multiple injuries including a fractured skull and bleeding in the brain. He died two days later in hospital.

Muhizin and Suriya, who also used glass bottles to hit his head and face, received the stiffer six-year jail terms. Suriya received six strokes of the can and the other men four.

A pair of twins, who were among six men who beat up and killed a stranger in Tiong Bahru Park two years ago, were jailed and ordered to be caned on Monday.

Anandraj Manimaran, 21, Segu Jamaldeen Nafil Mohamed, 20, S. Karthikesu, 21, and Abdul Samad Mohamed Kasim, 25, were each sentenced in the High Court to five years' jail and four strokes of the cane for causing death.

Muhizin Khan, 20, who is Segu's twin brother, was jailed six years and given four strokes of the cane. A sixth man, Suriya Thankamany, 20, was given six years and six strokes of the cane.

He had gone on the run after the attack and was placed on the "wanted" list, surrendering himself to the police only on March 15, 2011, nearly a week after the attack.

The men were drinking with friends in Tiong Bahru Park on March 8, 2011, when they got into a clash with Mr Goh Ho Leong, 52, an innocent bystander who was using a nearby toilet.

The fight left Mr Goh with about 95 injuries and he died in hospital two days later.

The scuffle started after Segu, Abdul Samad and a third friend went to confront another group in the public toilet in Tiong Bahru Park.

Segu pushed open the door of a cubicle, which was occupied by Mr Goh.

After arguing, Mr Goh left but returned with a friend and what looked like a bicycle chain.

The friend fled, but Mr Goh got into a fight with them. The six men punched and kicked Mr Goh until he fell, and also hit him with glass bottles.

They stopped only when passing joggers shouted at them.

Mr Goh was taken to hospital, where he died from his injuries two days later All the men's sentences are backdated to March 11, 2011, except for Suriya, whose sentence is backdated to March 17, 2011.
