MOM concerned over recent spate of worksite accidents

SINGAPORE: The Manpower Ministry (MOM) said it is concerned over the spate of accidents that have taken place in the past few days following another worksite accident on Wednesday.

The latest incident is the second work accident to occur this week. MOM is urging companies to proactively carry out thorough risk assessments and enforce safety measures to ensure the safety of their workers.

The accident on Wednesday happened at 11.40am at Lian Soon Construction Pte Ltd's worksite at Toa Payoh North.

Six workers - three from Bangladesh, two from China and one from Malaysia - were working on a scaffold when it collapsed.

Five workers sustained injuries and were immediately sent to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

Three of them - a Bangladeshi, a Chinese national and a Malaysian - have since been discharged.

The sixth worker from China was treated on-site for minor injuries.

MOM's director of occupational safety and health inspectorate, Mr Chan Yew Kwong said, "Most workplace accidents could have been prevented if companies and workers had put in more effort to ensure that the risks have been identified and mitigated. MOM will take stern action against companies found to have flouted safety regulations and placed their workers' lives at risk."

On September 30, two workers were killed when a crane toppled at the construction site of the National Art Gallery, near the Padang. Four others were injured in the same accident.

Cos the Toa Payoh Tree God Mega Banyan tree collapsed recently. .... it is expected lor...

That reminded me of India buildings, huat ah!

As the saying goes: 国家将亡,必有妖孽

with the recent cases of newish condos suing and complaining about the quality of construction work, i believe we are seeing the start of the result of fast construction using foreign labor....

the cracks are starting to show...

wait till someone dies, and if its a VIP, then maybe some proper action will be taken

compliance with safety standards have collapsed (no pun intended). erections have taken a tumble (pun intended). :p :*:

Cheaper, Better, Faster...pick any two. Guess which indicators are the easiest to measure and which indicator is the easiest to fudge?

This has always been a problem in Spore even with older condos. Back then the scene was dominated by only a few but there were the black sheep e.g. Far East Organisation. Go talk to people who own condos made by Far East & they can tell you plenty of stories.

This is what happens when you take up a multitude of frivolous construction projects in order to artificially boost the value of the land and prop up the GDP.

So, what will happen in 50-60 yrs when buildings will be torn down again for re-development?

1. The people who made the $$ n decisions will not be around to answer the mishaps; if any.
2. Can the concrete quality sustained?
3. When tearing them down, still lots of cheap workers are needed. By that time, wages will be
differently high or workers are from different sources.
Any civil engineers' feedback?

these people will have a tremendous karmic debt to repay, i hope

FE not known as Fxxking Easy for nothing. Built quality is lousy, and insider materials vendors say supply chain cut corners.

Personal experience: Even saw couple of joints held by a tooth-pick (upon some reno)

Some of their condo projects are missing important structures e.g. a beam & the owners only find out a few years later when they need to fix things. Just imagine people 10 years later & condo owners are still trying to sue them.
