Hong Kong bans shark fin at official banquets

HONG KONG: Hong Kong's government said on Friday it would stop serving shark fin at official functions as "a good example", following years of lobbying by conservation groups.

The southern Chinese city is one of the world's biggest markets for shark fin, which is viewed by many Asians as a delicacy and is often served as a soup at expensive Chinese banquets.

Along with shark fin, bluefin tuna will also fall under the ban, which was prompted by what authorities called "conservation concerns".

"The exclusion of these... items from official menus is a start and also serves as an example of raising public education and awareness on sustainability," a government spokesman said in a press release.

"The government is determined to take the lead and set a good example on this front," he said.

Trade in shark fin is not regulated in Hong Kong except for three species -- basking shark, great white shark and whale shark -- where the trade is restricted under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), to which Hong Kong is a signatory.

Non-profit organisation the Pew group estimates more than 70 million sharks are killed annually for their fins, leaving up to a third of open-water species on the brink of extinction.

It still early in this effort, but it is a start. I started boycotting shark's fin in 1992 at my wedding because I view finning as a completely wasteful an inhumane activity. Toronto banned shark's fin completely a few years back which I was quite happy about, Here in Singapore, its gonna take more time, her people's are still rich and sixty bucks for a bowl of soup is peanuts for these showoffs here.

It's only wasteful if you discard the rest of the shark's carcass.

And acquiring shark's fin for food is no less inhumane than slaughtering any other animal for food. Gotta love the selective morality from the PETA animal rights activist/lobbyist nutjobs.

Let me tell you what is the inevitable result of self-important humans trying to play ecologist gods and conserve every endangered species on the planet: pandas. Utterly worthless and helpless creatures that would have died in the wild if left on their own.

I am not against eating shark (or anything) provided if it is not wasteful, or wantonly cruel. I was already aware that finning was taking place long ago because of the high price of shark's fin and "fishermen" tossing off the rest of the shark on their harvest of fins. Whether we support PETA or not, it is better to have such people exposing ill-treatment and making the public aware of it than not having them. Our world will be worse off if nobody did anything about ecological issues.
