Minister Lui deigned to venture too far out to antagonise the super rich by levying a surcharge on those who own multiple cars. Especially those have fleets of exotic sports vehicles for showing off, not basic transportation to a day job. He also rejected calls for a Pay-As-You-Bid system and a ban on dealers bidding on COE, for reasons best known to himself - and dealers consulted by the minister.

Shifting qualifying models from Category A to Category B means no difference to the cost of car ownership, if the recent numbers of the 4 September COE bidding exercise is anything to go buy. That damn piece of paper is still another $80,000 tax going to the greedy government:

Category A (cars up to 1,600cc): $77,304, up from $76,223 previously;
Category B (cars above 1,600cc): $77,100, up from $76,607 previously;
Open category: $80,000, up from $79,223 previously.

I rather pay extra COE if road traffic become better.

A fleet of exotic sports cars do not cause any more congestion that one car used for transportation so why should they be penalised any further?

Those cars already pay a huge amount in annual road taxes.

I prefer more millionaires to own multiple cars and take up the COEs. You know why? The millionaire can only drive one car at a time. If each person took 5 COEs instead of 1 each, our congestion would be greatly reduced. Basic transportation indeed - take a fucking bus if you can't afford a COE.

they should be removed from the COE pool as it distorts actual numbers. especially since they are not causing extra congestion. the COEs these cars use up should be released back into the general pool

Yes agree, and since these people already paying so much road taxes every year the government is oblige to issue gold plated license plates to them too to distinguish them from the peasants.

a supercar in itself is better than any gold plated license plate.

you can spot a peasant a mile away. just look out for his Cat A car.

With all the fake spoilers and other wannabe accessories. They should just ban car loans totally.

the millionaire drives one car, the spouse drives the other, the butler drives another, the mistress/es drive/s the #4, #5... best arrangement.

Hi All,,,,Devil's Advocate here again...

By rejecting the pay as u bid scheme and penalising families with more cars has been shelved due to PAP and elite self interest..

However I feel the big problem is the lack of PUBLIC transport infrastructure in Singapore.

If we use the COE profits to generate better public transport infrastructure. If will improve productivity and make life better for the locals so that a car is not needed.

Like what some frens here have been saying,,,when MRT is up and running bus services are removed and all other shit tpt companies do to make a buck.

MRT and Buses need to compete with each other to offer better services,,,

this is just one step and just my rants..I said this many times before.

Also in singapore, for me, there is no need for a car, unless one got big family and can afford,,,

apparently the vehicles in Singapore are so affordable judging by the increasing number of vehicles on the road :eek::eek::eek:

I take MRT and taxi,,so location to stay next to good MRT station is damn important. to me take taxi better than have car,,go out for drinking session take taxi go home. No need to worry about parking, maintenance cost and so on,,,but if have family and small kids, car will be a good convenience to have.

With your mentality......owning a car in sg is for the rich only lor:(

am surprised we're in total agreement here! :p:p:p
how about scrapping that housing loan too? :eek::eek::eek:

Housing loans should stay, because newly married working couples may want their own place to stay.
All other loans should go, including car loans.
Business loans should only be granted to proven existing businesses and not individuals.
If a person needs to get a loan to buy a car, buy shares, start a business, renovate his home, buy an investment property, go for further studies, etc etc, he is simply not rich enough to do any of these things. And while they are at it, do consider scrapping "licensed moneylenders" too.

Use bus number "11" no need COE, License, parking fees, no ERP...the best!

A car is a luxury, not a necessity. You poor, want to drive, also can. Just pay what everybody else does. But don't complain about the millionaire owning 5 cars - he is doing Singapore a BIG BIG favour. Better if he owns 10, actually.
