I think China should send some merchant ships with them, since China is a manufacturing industry can sell things during the war.

China is sending ship in case they need to evacuate their citizens. This ship can launch its own helicopter/hovercraft and land on shore to pick up its own citizens. I am sure they will observe US military action (if they can even see much). But they likely have thousands of citizens working in Syria. In times of conflict, airport is closed and every man for themselves. With this ship, PLA can secure beach/harbor with small contingent of PLA troops and evacuate their citizens.
