Sengkang resident recorded a video of floor tiles popping. (STOMP Screengrab)
A video posted by a Sengkang resident — it shows the tiles in her living room popping and cracking — has received close to 20,000 views since she put it up on local citizen reporting site Stomp.
The resident, known as Sally, said that she recorded the footage on 12 August. She shared that when she was recording it, she was “great shock” and even “trembled” after seeing the floor crack.
She had heard “odd noises” before seeing the tiles pop in her HDB flat, adding that she did not foresee the floors to do so even after hearing rumours of similar incidents happening in nearby units.
Besides Sally, a Tampines resident also experienced a similar issue back in July 2011 but no further details on the earlier incident were reported.
A video of a similar incident was posted on Youtube earlier in 2009.

What can a resident do if a similar incident happens to them?
Some netizens gave some useful advice on fuckwarezone.com.
User Javier Heng said that it would be advisable to contact the Housing and(?) Development Board (HDB), who will provide “some money to stay elsewhere, while they change the tiles”.
He added that this depends on whether the flooring was done by HDB and where the warranty period is still in effect.
Yahoo Singapore has contacted HDB for comments.

Even our new citizens are complaining.<cite class="ugccmt-comment-meta">

Poor work should not happen. There should be gap about 0.2~0.5mm each tile from such case happen.

Lemme guess... a Tiong construction company had built those flats.

It's usually a sign that the whole building is about to collapse.

Cheaper, faster, better.

don't show my family that... they think HDB is perfect.. although not for them

This is a common occurrence, even a few decades ago. Largely due to use of large tiles. The small mosaic tiles used in the old days will have a different problem of loose tiles.

There may be several underlying reasons, and any one reason can cause the tiles to pop. One is the the floor shifted shape as the new building settles, and a little shift may cause the rigid tiles to pop.

Another is the tight gaps between tiles, which does not give sufficient allowance for normal expansion due to heat and normal building warping. These are very small changes that eyes can't see, but tiles are like glass, and the stress will build up until it suddenly crack or pop.
