A knife-wielding man, believed to be in his 40s, was detained on Friday afternoon after being involved in a five-hour standoff with the police in Chai Chee.

A police spokesperson said they received a call at about 10:20am requesting for assistance at a unit at Block 39 Chai Chee Avenue.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force were also on the scene to set up the safety life pack -- a large air cushion designed to break the fall of a person when he lands -- and rescue net as a precautionary measure. He was subsequently arrested for attempted suicide, said police.

The man, who was barefoot, shirtless and wearing jeans, was arrested by police officers in full riot gear at around 3.30pm, reported The Straits Times, who added that the man was unemployed and lived alone.

His neighbour, Madam Molly Gan, 48, followed right behind him as he was led away by the police.

Police investigations are ongoing.

Wouldn't a counselor be more appropriate? Not hostage situation lei, wear riot gear for fuck? The SPF these days everything also cannot handle.

The man was a druggie, threaten to jump when CNB went to his flat..

the scdf showed up first, ahead of the spf at 10:30am. why did it take the spf so much time to get their act together?

to be fair, i've seen police car arrive at the scene ahead of ambulance b4. some fella dash across the road, kena bang by van right in front of my eyes, the van didnt see him as he ran across a four lane road without a care. In fact he missed a car in the precious lane only narrowly. Fella flew at least 5m, the van brake after impact and you still see the fella a few metres ahead. maybe because the mata chu nearby nia, within 2 mins got police car, i think nobody even call police yet. I stop the police car ask and ask them to faster call ambulance. 3 patrol cars later, ambulance arrives. poor guy was lying on the ground moaning.

Aren't they armed with tasers for that sort of thing? Riot shields and batons so that they can go toe to toe with the knife wielding man, well, it just doesn't strike me as the brightest thing to do.

Logic is simple. After we all read the news, we know that this guy is attempting suicide and harmless to the others. We are looking at it from hind side.

But when the police got the news, they only know that someone is knife wielding. The can't foresee the future that this guy will not hurt anyone, including the officers.

I still fail to understand--why arrest the person when he wants to die? then must jail and take care of him

You should have called ANG YEW SENG first, running across the road like that, do not deserve to waste resources like, 3 police cars, 1 ambulance...any fire engines??
Why do they need 3 police cars??

I have seen, I think , a nutcase called for a fire engine... one fully equipped SCDF engine, one Rhino vehicle...3 POLICE CARS...one with a station inspector , ..no need to guess, whatever nutcase must have said...he saw "OSAMA ghost" or something...:p

Once, someone on the 12th floor, quarrel with his girlfriend, threaten to jump...two fire engines, with the pump up mattress, 6 police cars...& the SCDF what as that word, climb into the room from the top....one ambulance...a large gaping crowd...they should have asked for 1 Dirty Harry & one Cherry Picker will do.!!

By the same logic you have described, I fail to understand how one MSK floated across the Straits of SINgapore to Johor? but, cross dressed & waltzed through the customs to JB.

How often the sop take action?:D
Last time was quite often because of gang clash but now?:D
