The court heard that Sze’s close friend, Chow Tai Gheng, who was then a full-time national serviceman, was facing financial difficulties because of his father’s medical bills. To earn extra income, he roped in Sze to launch the website to offer sexual services in January last year.

Actually Singaporeans committing crime to pay medical bills is not uncommon due to lack of a proper universal healthcare system in place. For example if you have a child with autism, or down's syndrome, you suffer high financial burden of caring for the child. Problem is people who have to take care of the medical bills of their parents and children.

According to a report from The Straits Times, Maznah Abdullah, 49, had pleaded guilty to two charges of cheating and to one of giving false information to the police.

She claimed the insurance scam had been the brainchild of a friend of hers - identified in court papers only as "Simon" - and that she went along with it to earn money to pay for the medical bills of her eldest son, who suffers from cerebral palsy.

In both the above cases, the judge verified that both accused indeed have problems with paying medical bills of loved ones and gave them lighter than normal sentence of 1 month jail.

One of my friend was known to us as obedient filial to his parents so much so we nicknamed him "Good boy". 2 years ago his mother had cancer ...financial strain on him was very great and he shoplifted and was caught.

Recent changes announced by PM Lee are insufficient tweaks on a failing healthcare financing system. More progressive schemes are needed to ensure that Singaporeans have the same type of healthcare as other 1st world countries.

If all the poor & sick of Spore were to try to get into prison for the free food & medical care there probably wouldn't be any room for the real criminals
