At Lorong 23 in Geylang last Saturday, a tattooed man approached Madam Liu Ya Hui (above), 50.

He had mistaken her for a prostitute, and wanted her off “his territory”.

When he hit the defiant Madam Liu, her husband, Mr Tay Chong Teck, tried to defend her by warding off her attacker with a chair.

But the man came back and hit Mr Tay with a wooden rod. He ran away only when someone said the police were there.

The police are investigating and did not confirm if anyone had been arrested.

It's common to be mistaken for sex workers, say women who live and work in the area.
