YANGON (AFP) - "Big Zaw" has known he was different since a teenage growth spurt sent him soaring above his neighbours in a remote Myanmar village.

Now at seven foot eight inches he is believed to be the country's tallest man, and a recent rise to fame means he can finally seek treatment abroad for the health condition behind his towering height.

"My friends call me Big Zaw," said Mr Win Zaw Oo, who at 233cm is significantly taller than the 168cm (five foot six) average Myanmar man.

"I do not fit in an ordinary car. When the doctor brought me here, he had to hire a truck," said the 36-year-old, who was given access to healthcare after a story about him in state media this year sparked a flurry of interest from reporters and medical experts.

A pity he is now 36. If much younger, surely a target for NBA teams.

he is suffering from a brain tumour which produces his " gigantism"

poor fella..Acromegaly (/ˌækrɵˈmɛɡəli/; from Greek άκρος akros "extreme" or "extremities" and μεγάλος megalos "large") is a syndrome that results when the anterior pituitary gland produces excess growth hormone (GH) after epiphyseal plate closure at puberty. A number of disorders may increase the pituitary's GH output, although most commonly it involves a GH-producing tumor called pituitary adenoma, derived from a distinct type of cell (somatotrophs).

Acromegaly most commonly affects adults in middle age,[1] and can result in severe disfigurement, complicating conditions, and premature death if unchecked. Because of its pathogenesis and slow progression, the disease is hard to diagnose in the early stages and is frequently missed for years until changes in external features, especially of the face, become noticeable.

Acromegaly is often associated with gigantism.

funny that the local docs can do for such foreigners FOC n charge locals very exorbitantly.

there is a very ironical quote here:

IF THE SICKNESS DON'T KILL YOU, MAYBE THE MEDICAL BILLS WILL.

and so the rule for an average singaporean: YOU CAN ONLY DIE BUT U CANNOT FALL SERIOUSLY SICK.

LTB,if any Singaporean who needs a life-saving surgery and who cannot afford the medical bill, he will be operated upon FOC ...We are a kind, generous and compassionate society. We do not allow any Singaporean who needs medical care to die simply because he cannot to pay the medical bill.
