More than 3000 cases of welfare fraud have been uncovered in the last six months through increased information sharing between Inland Revenue and the Ministry of Social Development.

Associate Social Development Minister Chester Borrows said that the fraud from these cases
would have cost New Zealanders $33.7 million per year.

"While it is always disappointing to see some people are willing to break the law and take money they're not entitled to, it happens, and we have a responsibility to the taxpayer to stop it," he said.

Of the benefit cancellations, 1948 cases related to unemployment benefits and 559 related to the sickness benefit. In total, 3139 illegitimate benefits were found.

Government introduced increased information sharing between the two agencies six months ago, which helped detect beneficiaries whose taxable income did not match up with what they had declared to ministry staff.

Their cases were reviewed, and if they were earning more than they should be while on a benefit, their entitlement was cancelled.

The ministry was now working to recover the overpayments, which included making special orders to take a cut of some offenders' wages.
Those that deliberately mislead agencies could be prosecuted, Mr Borrows said.

there will always be these kind of dishonest idiots....but that doesnt mean we should stop helping. Just try to be more careful and discerning when helping though.

The fraud committed by the rich and corporations comes to billions of dollars and there are lots of them around. Why fuss over small change when there are billions to collect?

Don't just help the poor. Some of these poor folk are fuckers.
Help the deserving poor, i.e. those who are good chaps :)

There is no such thing as "deserving poor".

When we say help the poor, we don't mean giving money to those lazy bums who refuse to work. You TWAT! :oIo::kma:

There is no such thing as "deserving poor".

There may be good decent kind chaps who suffered misfortune or tragedy and became poor.
"Deserving" as in they deserve to be helped, not that they deserve to be poor.

It's human nature to get any freebie one can get hold of. As a student in the US, we purchased food stamps from "poor people" for half the shown value. They get cash to buy their booze and cigarettes, we get more "purchase value" to exchange for groceries and food at the supermarkets. win-win situation. Nobody was hurt.

Cheers!

In Singapore, the idea of 'helping' the poor is raise GST. This makes you wonder why Ass Loong don't increase GST every year then.

Ah Sam over here our welfare is our seepeeeff marney and we can't even touch it when we're in trouble. Who's the fraudster here? :kma:
