A debit card (also known as a bank card or check card) is a plastic payment card that provides the cardholder electronic access to his or her bank account(s) at a financial institution. Some cards have a stored value with which a payment is made, while most relay a message to the cardholder's bank to withdraw funds from a payee's designated bank account. The card, where accepted, can be used instead of cash when making purchases. In some cases, the primary account number is assigned exclusively for use on the Internet and there is no physical card.[1][2]
In many countries, the use of debit cards has become so widespread that their volume has overtaken or entirely replaced cheques and, in some instances, cash transactions. The development of debit cards, unlike credit cards and charge cards, has generally been country specific resulting in a number of different systems around the world, which were often incompatible. Since the mid-2000s, a number of initiatives have allowed debit cards issued in one country to be used in other countries and allowed their use for internet and phone purchases.
Unlike credit and charge cards, payments using a debit card are immediately transferred from the cardholder's designated bank account, instead of them paying the money back at a later date.
Debit cards usually also allow for instant withdrawal of cash, acting as the ATM card for withdrawing cash. Merchants may also offer cashback facilities to customers, where a customer can withdraw cash along with their purchase.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

most banks in the u.s. have replaced or upgraded the old school atm card with a bank card or debit card. the new card can be used for almost all transactions, from atm to buying groceries to cashless purchases of candles and condoms, except as an old school credit card.

It is not that the online retailers are accepting debit cards, they are accepting the debit card only if it is a VISA or Mastercard debit card. They don't care if it is debit or credit card so long the card is banded with VISA or Mastercard, they will accept it. This is because payment is handled by the VISA or Mastercard network.

Your non-VISA or non-Mastercard debit card will not be accepted, even if they want to, because there is no way the online retailers can process your payment. When you use a VISA or Mastercard debit card, the payment is handled by VISA or Mastercard network.

If you have just a debit card, they will not accept it. If you have a VISA or Mastercard debit card, they will accept it.

A debit card is your standard ATM card issued by the bank which is tied to your chequing or savings account. If the chequing or savings account has no money, the transaction will not be approved. This is why you need to deposit cash to the account to make a purchase.

[delete]You may want to throw in some examples because the online retailers may be processing the payment through NETS in which case then the online retailers will accept non-VISA or non-Mastercard debit cards.[delete]

You already said Amazon, in that case the debit card they are accepting is the VISA or Mastercard debit card. To Amazon, it doesn't care if it is debit or credit, as long as VISA or Mastercard approved the transaction, they will accept the order. If you use the VISA or Mastercard debit card, then you must ensure your account that is tied to this card have cash, if not VISA or Mastercard will not approve the transaction. So you need to deposit cash into the account that is linked to the debit card.

LOL. A common mistake made by those with a severe case of establishment mentality, interpreting words exactly as they are literally, without giving any allowances for slight deviation in meaning. Trying to act smart as usual.

Shown up by a simple and accurate reply.
