A 2M-LONG Queensland grouper weighing 270kg has been caught by fishermen off Singapore's eastern-most point.

It took a forklift and seven men to lift the beast into the kitchen, and more than 10 hours of cleaning before Mr Johnny Tan, 52, owner of seafood restaurant Grouper King, could serve the giant to customers yesterday.

Mr Tan told The Straits Times that he received a call from fishermen, who caught the fish near Pedra Branca, at about 1am on Tuesday and went down to the Senoko fishing port personally to witness their catch.

He said it was the biggest grouper he had seen in his 20 years in the business, adding: "I was shocked to hear that such a big fish could be caught so close to Singapore.

fish that huge are usually quite old in age so their flesh isn't too delicious. They also are very expensive. I bet the fishermen made a ton of cash on that fish.

There isn't any conservation awareness in the Sinkie (or even Asian) mindset. They wouldn't even release a fingerling once its caught. Something this big is a prize to bring home to the cooking pot. In advanced countries, females of species are returned so they have a chance to reproduce, this part of the world - the roe is the tastiest part.

Cheers!

the fish must be quite old to grow this big, that would mean the toxic caused by pollution also build up over the years. the ST claimed restaurant will be charging customer $90per kg for a chance to eat the loco fillet of this giant fish. presonally think only gongkia with too much $$ will pay this price.

The big grouper is known as a "Gao Tun". On the contrary, the fish meat is excellent. Its texture is succulent, bouncy & soft. Dont believe in old wives tales that big fish means flesh is not nice. Certain big fish, eg jewfish, taste very nice. In fact, the bigger they rae, the better the flesh!
