Slam the brakes on road rage

Straits Times Forum Saturday, June 8, 20

THE articles on road rage ("One road rage attack every 4 days in S'pore", May 26; and "Curbing road rage", Sunday) cited the rising number of cases that resulted in assault, from 63 in 2010 to 97 last year.

My, my. We are getting more tense under the PAP government aren’t we? :D

I was the victim of a road bully in April. A driver was unhappy because I had merged into the fast lane on the expressway in front of his vehicle.

Let me guess….You merged into the extreme right lane which is meant for overtaking and for the use of emergency vehicles driving at a precise 90 km/h as indicated by your speedometer and feeling real smug about it not knowing that you were actually driving at about 81 km/h as speedometers on standard cars are manufactured to read 10% optimistic. You travel at 81 km/h on a 90 km/h road, ten cars down behind you will end up at 71 km/h and 61km/h from the twentieth car. That’s how inexplicable slowdowns appeared on expressways. Doesn’t it feel great to have so much power in your hands?

On top of that the Traffic Police allows an extra 10 km/h for overtaking ie on the expressway speed limit of 90 km/h you are allowed to hit 100 km/h when you attempt an overtake. That means 110 km/h on your speedometer. You are booked for speeding based on police motorcycles with calibrated true speed speedometers or radar guns. Even Traffic Police Expressway Patrol Unit’s WRX’es and Volvos standard speedometers will read different from on board radar speed detection devices..

He retaliated by cutting in front of my car at high speed, with his right arm stuck out of his window in an obscene gesture.

No picture No talk. You can even claim he pointed a gun at you!

He then slammed on his brakes and displayed the gesture again, before walking over to yell in my face: "You better watch out!"

You rolled down your window and push your face out for his convenience?

In the 15 or so seconds it took to launch my phone's camera, he had run back to his car while displaying the obscene gesture, then sped off before I could take a photograph of his vehicle.

You need the forum boss for help in syntax. You can’t rely on SPH staff these days…..Please upgrade to a better phone if you need 15 seconds for your phone to launch into camera mode. Sigh….Unsubstantiated allegations again.

As mentioned in the articles, many such incidents go unreported and here's why.
First, drivers are ill-equipped. Many do not have in-vehicle cameras to capture evidence.

Buy one lor! Talk so much. Blame game again.

Second, the reporting system does not help.
When I made a report at the Clementi police station, I was directed to the Traffic Police.
When I went to the Traffic Police headquarters, an irate supervisor not only turned me away, but also asked who had directed me there, so she could "scold" the person for advising me incorrectly.

Why didn’t you lodge a complaint with the Traffic Police management? Worry you will be charged for making a false report?

In the end, after I filed a magistrate's complaint, the case got referred back to Clementi police station and an investigative officer called me after reviewing camera footage from the Land Transport Authority.

Called you to say what? Hello?

I have yet to hear further from the authorities.

We have yet to hear from the Police as to how they have arrived at the conclusion on the Tin Pei Lin case.

Many have asked why I bothered to make a report when I was not hurt and the system made me jump through so many hoops.

You are of the the usual Sinkie variety, dumfuck cunt?

It is precisely this passive mentality that needs to be changed to ensure road bullies are kept in check.

Cheebye ah! When Sinkies change their passive mentality, the PAP will be finished as a ruling party for sure.

More importantly, the authorities need to take these reports more seriously.

Dumbcunt, you should have reported it was a member of the AHPETC who did that to you. They would have reacted by sending a hundred policemen with riot shields to arrest the perp.

Instead of dismissing cases because of scant details, they should use the tools at their disposal to catch the road bullies.

Good idea! There should be one policeman assigned to every individual Sinkie driver 24/7.

In the May 26 article, lawyer Daniel Atticus Xu said a case is classified as "voluntarily causing hurt" if there is an assault with no dangerous weapon used.
I would like to counter that a car is a dangerous weapon in the wrong hands, and being the victim of a road bully could be a whole lot worse than being assaulted with a weapon.

Goodness Gracious Me! I had been assaulted with a dangerous weapon at least a thousand times in my 34 years of driving and still none the wiser!

Let's have more talk and more action on Singapore's road rage problem.

The stage is yours, cheebye!

I liked the part where she says she failed to launch her phone's camera in time.

Deliberately slamming on the brakes to force the car behind to stop is a a serious offence. This case should not have gone to the magistrate. The Police should have launched an investigation immediately.

If the same thongs happened to a senior civil servant, the guy will be on all fours. Just ask Sam Sinnathurai, ex high court judge. It wad not even a serious case, it was an argument over parking space at Holland Village involving his wife and some chap. The police brought the guy all the way to the chambers to apologise. Thats service for you. One country 2 systems.

If she cant bloody operate a camera phone within, what 15 secs?, that time of a person coming over to her car, gesturing, walking back and lastly driving off - I think she is right that a car is a weapon in the hands of a moron. She really shouldnt be driving for heaven's sake.

Woman claimed to be journalist's 'husband' of 10 years

16 Mar 2011

SOURCE: The Straits Times

FIVE years after their one meeting, a freelance interior designer started sending insulting and threatening messages via e-mail, voicemail and letter to a journalist.

Yesterday, Amy Chua Kwan Ming, 34, admitted harassing Ms Joanne Lee Li Li, 36, eight times between August 2008 and May 2009.

The latter, currently a senior correspondent with The Straits Times’ Money Desk, was then editor of The Straits Times Online.

Pleading for a light fine, Chua, who did not have a lawyer, informed the court that she was receiving outpatient treatment at the Institute of Mental Health.

She expressed deep remorse and apologised to Ms Lee. She also promised the court that she would not disturb her in any way.

District Judge Roy Neighbour noted that a psychiatric report indicated that Chua suffers from schizophrenia but was deemed to be of sound mind and fit to stand trial.

The court called for a probation report to gauge her suitability for rehabilitation.

Police investigations revealed that the two women had met some time in 2003 or 2004, when Chua asked Ms Lee for an autograph.

In early 2008, she started sending letters and e-mail messages to Ms Lee.

Every day, there would be at least two to three e-mail messages which included confessions of love and accusations that Ms Lee was betraying that love.

In one message, Chua claimed to be Ms Lee’s “husband” of 10 years and claimed that they had a child together. In another, she threatened to hire a private investigator to check on Ms Lee.

She also admitted leaving more than 80 voicemail messages for Ms Lee besides calling The Straits Times Online hotline repeatedly and badgering Ms Lee’s colleagues for information on her work schedule and whereabouts.

The voice messages could last from under a minute to nearly an hour. In some, she was incoherent or would laugh hysterically between sentences before reverting to a melancholy voice.

Alarmed that Chua’s tone was becoming increasingly aggressive, Ms Lee reported the matter to the police.

Chua, who was in court with her mother, will appear next at a hearing on April13.

According to medical literature, schizophrenia is a mental disorder that makes it difficult for the patient to tell the difference between real and unreal experiences. Sufferers may also be unable to think logically or behave normally.

If you asked me, I'd always say that pussies are the worst drivers on this planet. They are either too careful and hesitate to accelerate when necessary or just can't be bothered and expect others to give way to them, no matter what situations they may be in.
