The Nordic model of welfare state is much admired around
the world. It has given the people a high quality of life without destroying
their work ethic as they have consistently scored high in the top 10 positions
in global economic competitivess. In fact, a Danish economist has gone as far as
saying the welfare state is their competitive advantage. So proud they are of
their model that they set up the Nordic Centre of Excellence NordWel (The Nordic
Welfare State – Historical Foundations and Future Challenges).

NordWel is a multidisplinary, cross-national research network of eight
partner units in the Nordic universities. I met up with the Director of NordWel
Professor Pauli Kettunen who is also head of the department of political and
economic affairs at the University of Helsinki. The good professor kindly
arranged a roundtable discussion with senior researchers of NordWel so that I
could benefit from a wide range of views and experiences.

Trusting society, Creative industries

Dr Christopher Lloyd, a Visiting Professor from the University of New
England, said the extent of abuse of the welfare state has been exaggerated.
There is no hard evidence to back it up. In fact, the data showed that unclaimed
benefits exceed amount abused.

Percentage of abuse is pretty low in northern Europe as the people are
“culturally not inclined towards abuse”, a point emphasised by the Finnish
researchers who all claimed that “people in Finland have to try very hard to be
lazy”. The Nordic states are small countries that are culturally homogeneous;
they are a cooperative and trusting society and this helps to sustain it.

Instead of being abused, the welfare state releases the productive and
creative capacity of its people by giving them confidence in the future through
the various benefits schemes. A strong creative industry has emerged with world
beaters like Nokia and Angry Games (a video game franchise created by a Finnish
computer game developer).

Welfare boosts fertility

The welfare state has also been a great boost to Finland’s high fertility
rate of around 1.8 which is close to the replacement level of 2.1. The generous
schemes enable women to have babies and return to the workplace. The public
daily care centres play an important role.

There is a law-based right for children below the age of 3 to be taken care
of by the care centres which are heavily subsidised (85%) by the state. Each
centre is run by 3 well qualified staff with one of them having an academic
degree as day care centres are regarded as part of the educational system.
Education is free from pre-school to university level (first degree). It is also
very good, having been “ranked in the OECD PISA studies as the best educational
system many years running” (Alexander Stubb). The status of teachers is very
high even though the salary is not. Class size is small, enabling teachers to
give greater attention to the needs of each individual pupil. There is no need
for parents to spend their hard earned savings on private tuition for their
children as Singapore parents do.

Not surprisingly, Finland is the best place in the world to be a mother,
according to the Save the Children International charity organisation in their
State of the World’s Mothers’ report. Fathers play their part and help with
domestic chores. There is no need for imported foreign domestic helpers.

On Senate Square with Prof Pauli Kettunnen. Behind us is the statue of
Russian Emperor Alexander II. Finland was part of the Russian empire until
granted independence by the Bolsheviks in December 1917, two months after they
took over Moscow.

Yes. "I know important people" is his brand identity.

Note how he uses the tag "Jee Say was a Presidential candidate in the 2011 Presidential Election." as his calling card.

Sounds like pure marketing when he use the tag "Jee Say was a Presidential candidate in the 2011 Presidential Election."

Sinkieland could be up there as the BEST nation with the First World countries in education, finance, welfare, etc. Instead it prefers to be the best autocratic regime in denying its people their freedom, press, law and with sham elections.

TJS is indeed a worthy president in comparison to that monkey Tony Tan in the Istana. Rather have a real monkey as president than a puppet.

You conveniently ignore the fact that the PAP has to govern a nation that is 75% ethnic Chinese. It has no choice but to be autocratic.

You can't simply transplant the system and methods of the Nordic states to Singapore as they are designed with a Caucasian electorate in mind.

The recent events in Stockholm vividly demonstrate what happens when other ethnicities who have no grasp whatsoever of the Western concepts of democracy and fair play become part of the mix.

By Colin Freeman, Husby

1:36PM BST 25 May 2013

Like the millions of other ordinary Swedes whom he now sees himself as one of, Mohammed Abbas fears his dream society is now under threat. When he first arrived in Stockholm as refugee from Iran in 1994, the vast Husby council estate where he settled was a mixture of locals and foreigners, a melting pot for what was supposed to be a harmonious, multi-racial paradise.

Two decades on, though, "white flight" has left only
one in five of Husby's flats occupied by ethnic Swedes, and many of their immigrant replacements do not seem to share his view that a new life in Swedenis a dream come true. Last week, the neighbourhood erupted into rioting, sparking some of the fiercest urban unrest that Sweden has seen in decades, and a new debate about the success of racial integration.

"In the old days, the neighbourhood was more Swedish and life felt like a dream, but now there are just too many foreigners, and a new generation that has grown up here with
just their own culture," he said, gesturing towards the hooded youths milling around in Husby's pedestrianised shopping precinct.

"Also, in Sweden you cannot hit your children to discipline them, and this is a problem for foreign parents. The kids can feel they can cause whatever trouble they want, and the police don't even arrest any of them most of the time."

This weekend, after six consecutive nights of rioting, Mr Mohammed was not the only one questioning the
Swedish social model's preference for the carrot over the stick. Many Swedes were left asking why a country that prides itself on a generous welfare state, liberal social attitudes and a welcoming attitude towards immigrants should ever have race riots in the first place.

Btw, I am proud to say this: I voted for TJS in the last presidential election. And I shall continue to support him to be my president instead of some puppet candidates.

We need more independent creative minds to make Sinkieland a better place for everyone instead of only for the elites.

Are we happy with the present state of sinkieness?

What has 75% ethnic Chinese got to do with being autocratic?

Many European countries are a mixed lot such as France, Belgium, the Netherlands, etc yet they are not autocratic. They are about 75% French, German, Dutch... but vibrant democracies.

The Chinese do not understand democracy. They have to be told what to do and need to be severely punished if they don't tow the line.

I quote from the Almighty Lee Kuan Yew :

Anybody who decides to take me on needs to put on knuckle dusters. If you think you can hurt me more than I can hurt you, try. There is no other way you can govern a Chinese society.

Why are you quoting a dictator and mighty conman? I will put on knuckle dusters and beat the daylight out of him!

Yes it may boost fertility rate but alot of unwanted pregnancy. remember the case of:"7 children from 7 different fathers.

In order for democracy to work, the basic notion of honesty and fair play has to permeate society first. It didn't happen overnight even in the West.

The Chinese aren't ready for it yet. Their psyche needs to undergo further development. It may happen in the future but it hasn't happened yet.

I'll give you a glaring example. Many golf courses in NZ used to have honesty boxes as the club houses were not manned during the week. You put your green fees into a slot and proceed to play your round.

This system was abandoned in the early 2000s with the mass arrival of Chinese immigrants. They arrived at the golf course in their Mercs but they played without paying and laughed at the stupid Kiwis for ever coming up with such a ridiculous system of payment.

After i see the shit tat has been happening in aussieland with regards to welfare state. I for one dont support it as it benefits the trailer park trash, Single moms n refugees who r nothing but parasites to society. Its better not to have it. However for singapore case. The problem is the rent seeking behaviour of the pappies. Which r screwing up the lives of the middle class. N in the article another point is these nordic countries were homogenious. It should have been kept tat way. Letting in foreigners especially muslims who have no intention of accepting the nordic way of life is asking for trouble.

It's true actually. They do not earn as much but are happier. The emphasis on money just isn't there.

Sinkie Presidents don't do anything you twit. They're there for ceremonial purposes eg hosting dinners and receiving foreign dignitaries.

Occasionally they'll throw a garden party for the serfs and go about smiling and shaking hands and that's about it. After the party, they'll spend 15 minutes disinfecting any parts of their bodies that came in contact with the peasants.

Then why pay him such a high salary? To be a coverall for the obsence pay of the cabinets?

Hello boss, honesty and democracy are two different things. The Chinese once they have tasted true democracy, will be no different from the angmos.

But I must admit the Chinese can be a selfish lot. Due to their education, culture, upbringing, etc... and fascist society they lived in. These contributed to their stagnation. But wait till democracy hits them, they will be as demo-crazy just the same!
