Ok will share wat i know. The full name should b diesel electric subs. When under water they run on batteries and on shallow water can be quieter than nuclear subs. Also not sure if used today. But there is a snorkel device which allows the sub to run under water with the diesel engines running as the fumes are vented through the snorkel.

In Germany. It seems they have the most advanced conventional subs n are developing a sub running on hydrogen cells. The endurance is quite good.

Nuclear subs is not for anyone singkieland included.

A diesel boat run its diesel engine while on surface to recharge the batteries. Only use it batteries power while submerge. But submerge speed is much lesser than while on surface.

There are more modern diesel boats out there in the arms market so dunno why the navy settled on a boat that more than 50yo?

Donot forget the underground command center & the underground storage...they just hide, rendezvous with the subs & sail away...
