precisely. if the fella walking in macritchie reservour during strong wind and rain kena killed by falling tree, that fella is suay and its his fault for being there in that kind of weather. but this guy was driving in his car on the road. how can just sweep under the rug and hide behind the term "act of god". at least investigate and find out what the fuck happened why the tree so easily uproot and make changes so it wont happen again.

like one guy say, peasant killed by tree, nothing done. minister car scatched by falling branches, u can be sure the whole road trees will be trimed and double checked personally by a supervisor. wtf this is like china a thousand years ago.

At the reservoir there are clusters of trees , as in a jungle, the top branches interlock each other, sort of providing support for each tree. It will take a mighty storm to uproot an entire line of trees there or even flatten the jungle. There are individual ones, that grow very tall & stand alone, & for many reasons to list do topple over, ALONE. There is one, that straddle across the running track at MacRitchie for many years, if you jog regular there you would have come across that tree & I wonder if they had removed it today.

What I am saying is, trees, rocks, soils do come off & fall down naturally, but our roadside trees & vegetation are "instant", that is planted by men. The chance of them falling over & getting uprooted have a higher odds than those grown naturally & those naturally grown, we could say, fell by the hand of God.

The trees by the roadside can be weaken by contruction works, drains upgrading, endless cable laying near to the trees, re-paving the sidewalks, expanding or contracting the road...plus termites, wood worms & slipshod checking.

Only thing now is to wait till one of the MIW or elite super serpent get flattened by an Angsana. If any of the inner cabinet kana, u can bet your bottom $ that quick decision action will be taken and NParks will no longer be "fixated" by the trees.

maybe each tree must be bind to a rope so when it falls, it fall away from the road

you cant control it from falling, but you can control its direction of falling

U may have something there. NParks should consider putting stakes or ropes to support the trees. We see this quite common here. It's the least they can do to protect the motorists.

You may find them implementing this soon, but only at certain "prime" locations.
Don''t forget, certain people are more valuable than others.

can in use daisy chain method.
rope all the roadside trees in 1 parellel loop
so when 1 tree failed, the 2 trees between the failed 1 will gather strength support

but then again, unless every year many people are killed by fallen tree,if arent..life moves on

the tree should kill a minitoot's son, wife but please do not kill the minitoot's mistress. then there shall be a big hooha for the court and big time biz for the lawyers.

if it kills an average innocent sgporeans, then it's ok cos sgporeans are disposal digits.

On the contrary, when the last leaf falls and the "Grand Old Singapore Tree" felled many lives will be saved and emancipated.

Very good point,,the roots are shallow and if that is the case, its the Gahmen fault as they planted this sort of half baked trees. Wonder if they can plant the instant tree deeper. way deeper but I guess that will kill the tree. And there are going to be heaps of these trees falling over as they are almost everywhere.

not quite part and parcel of nature

singapore roadside trees are mostly instant ones without primary roots that grow vertically downward, their roots are secondary or lateral roots that spread out sideway on the surface of the soil so nothing to hold deep down against strong wind

note the pictures

SINGAPORE: Four people were injured when a tree fell onto the roof of a single-storey building at Alexandra Hospital during a thunderstorm on Thursday afternoon.

Two were trapped in the building and had to be rescued by SCDF officers.

SCDF said the incident happened at about 2.50pm -- and it took about 40 minutes to rescue the first person. The second person was pulled out from under the concrete debris another 45 minutes later.

Alexandra Hospital said one staff and three technicians were working on a new staff lounge in the building.

The staff and a technician managed to evacuate on their own. They sustained minor injuries and were discharged after some treatment.

As for the two technicians who had to be rescued, one was admitted to the general ward, and the other placed under observation at A&E.
Alexandra Hospital said it will continue to monitor the condition of all four people.

The hospital said certified arborists conduct annual checks on the health of the trees. They were last inspected between mid-September and end-October 2013.

This particular tree was reported to be in good health, with low maintenance.
