Old news but good to know that our great PM Lee Hsien Loong is donating his increase salary to the charities for 5 years period starting from 2007.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will donate his salary increase for the next five years to charity, he announced in Parliament today.

"I want to make clear to Singaporeans that my primary considerations are for the future of this nation, and not for my own salary. Hence I have decided to donate my salary increase for the next 5 years to charity," he said when wrapping up the debate on the pay increases for ministers and top civil servants.

From April, PM Lee will get a 25.5 per cent pay rise, from $2.46 million to $3.1 million year. This means he will be donating over $3 million to charity over the next five years.

"The Government will pay my full pay, because that is how the system must work. But for 5 years, I will donate the increase in my salary from this and subsequent revisions," added the PM.

"I do not expect other ministers to follow. What individual ministers do is up to them. I know that they already support various worthy causes. It should not be a public ostentatious display, but a private matter for them to decide at their own discretion."

PM Lee encouraged all Singaporeans to donate to good causes.

Mr Lee said the pay revision is "politically a most difficult decision" to make but it is an "absolutely critical" issue.

"If we do not tackle it now, the problem will not go away; it will just get worse. And we will be in serious trouble," he said.

The Cabinet discussed the pay hike issue at length, said the PM, adding that Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong and Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, in particular, "strongly encouraged me to do it."

"They have been Prime Ministers - they know the importance of having good ministers to help them in their work," he told Parliament.

"Finally, it is my call as PM. I have decided to move now, because the overriding importance of keeping salaries competitive."


Just look at how great our PM Lee is. Our great PAP is really doing a great job for Singapore. 3 cheers for PAP!

Imagine you are the King of the country. The citizens of your country are unhappy and suffering, barely earning enough to survive. Your trusted ministers who are supposed to govern alongside with you are similarly feeling the heat. Some might even want to quit or migrate to another country because they have amassed enough money.

So you have to pay your ministers more to keep them loyal to you. However, doing so, you incur the wrath of the citizens. So to placate these peasants, you declare that all your salary increment will be donated to charity.

Great strategy. Even makes people forget that your salary was already very high even before the increment!

That's the catch, he got no balls to donate ALL his salary.

With so many side line income form his family, I wonder how much is enough for him.

In addition, he gets an expense allowance of 50,000 dollars toward costs related to discharge of official duties and any unused amount under this head needs to be reverted to the Treasury.

This is getting really silly. Instead of throwing money to retain talent in this country , they got to examine the root cause of the problem.

What makes well educated people leave. Why don't they want to serve the country. What went wrong.

There may be a handful of well-educated living in overseas, but the reason these handful of people not in Singapore doesn't mean all of them dislike the government. They may be overseas to pursue their studies, career and dreams. But not to worry, we have great pool of talents around to help Singapore to achieve greater success.

Well if I have to apologize for the mistake you claimed, then I wonder how many apologies you all have to give for all those misleading headings.
