SINGAPORE, April 11, 2013 (AFP) - A heroin courier has become the first convicted drug trafficker in Singapore to avoid a death sentence following reforms in the application of capital punishment, officials said Thursday.

Its not because he's a Mat lah..

Hangman noose's doesn't discriminate any race..

If you ever step foot inside the condemned cells, you will see many chaps of all races waiting to for the day they enter the gallow room on an early Friday morning at Changi Prison.. Most are on murder, drug trafficking charges..

That Mat was just plain lucky.. He co operated with CNB and revealed the source of his drug supply.. In short he was a Pao Toh Kia..

CNB dangled him an offer he couldn't refuse.. Its co operate or the noose..

He chosed to co operate to escape being dragged into the gallows to meet his Maker..

I have seen chaps on life sentence being released after serving 20 odd years inside Changi Holiday Inn..
Most were very blur when coming out of the gate.. After being out of touch with outside life for 20 over years, many felt awkward to live a normal life again..

The link you gave is the case of this chap who was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a Jap lady in a hotel back then in the 90s.. He then made matter worst by holding hostage a WPC when he was inside the CID lock up..

"You, Abdul Nasir bin Amer Hamsah, are charged that you, on or about 3 February 1996 between 5.05pm and 7.35pm at the lock-up of the Criminal Investigation Department, 90 Eu Tong Sen Street, Singapore, together with one Low Theng Gee and in furtherance of the common intention of you both, did wrongly confine Woman Corporal Ong Bee Lay and Corporal Chia Khen Siong of the Singapore Police Force, with intent to hold both of them for ransom, to wit, a car, two guns and eight bullets and you have thereby committed an offence punishable under s 3 of the Kidnapping Act (Cap 151) read with s 34 of the Penal Code (Cap 224)."

He specially asked for an all red outfit during his hanging.. Not sure whether his request was granted..

Hanging takes place on early Friday morning..

Most of the condemned prisoners had to be dragged in by prison staff into the gallows.. Most were in fear and terrified.. Some passed motion and urine.. Many cried only to be consoled and comforted by the religious chaps present during the hanging.. But its no use.. By 8 am, their stiff bodies would be ready for collection by their immediate relatives..

The Bayi and the Kelings wardens involved in the executions used to pray at this small Hindu temple at Jalan Bina years ago..

Its a makeshift temple just besides the Changi prison.. The Govt then removed the temple.. The devotees then asked permission to build a small temple replace the old one..

The present one is located at the car park of this warehouse building at Changi North..

Oh , now no more cigarettes ? last time family members can bring 2 packets each time they visited them . And teaboy ( term for inmate who work in the staff canteen ) will kia chun ( aka sailing boat aka smuggling ) the cigars to other hall inmates ( same shirt as those in the condem cell ) when those teaboy pushes their food trolley from hall to hall to sell food for the warden . That is how cigar smuggling from hall to hall blk to blk works .

Nowadays even more siong for wardens - the oldtimer SS people cannot control the YP crowd - last time can talk to headman but even the heads are at loss on how to handle them - they still ask newbies whether got wear shirt or not - maybe one day somebody will make movie about the Changi experience from SS perspective.
Machiam very similar to OZ (the HBO series)....
