on Saturday, with English no longer included among the exams' compulsory subjects.

Part of their current 'phai wai' fever.

Even many night clubs adopt this attitude and behaviour.

Just wonder whether they are really serious and so confident that going forward, Chinese economic performance is so good that they will not need the foreign investments and foreign currencies anymore? Or, is this just a temporary fad or some new campaign that will pass by eventually?

It is to get the best minds in and not limited to those who are proficient in English. The pool for English proficient ones will be significantly smaller as English is not their 1st language. Once in, they can still brush up on their English.

In Singapore we were silly, we used the languages to filter people when we should be picking the best and the brightest. It throws out smart people who do not have naturally affinity for languages. Only when his own grandchildren suffered old man decided to act. In the meantime, send the chap to the Amercian School so no one can ask why he is not doing Mandarin and given special treatment.

Mongolia's case was also a bit sad. It's territory was carved up by China and the Soviet Union.

If you look at the modern Mongolian script it looks like the Russian Cyrillic script. It was forced upon them by their Russian masters. Now the younger generation of Mongolian kids don't know how to read/write the traditional Mongolian characters.

China is slowly extending its influence, and a mandarin china is one of the many ways it is doing that. Notice popular chinese program like 非诚勿扰 insist that you know some mandarin regardless if you are a foreigner. However, outside of china, English is still the lingua franca of the world. I would say in 5-10 years time knowing both would have its advantages.

My peers forced their kids to learn German when the Berlin Wall came down....thinking Germany to become next superpower.

I've worked with urine tiongs in europe, america, spore and even in tiongland.
the UK/US/Aus educated urine bastard still speak with a ching chong accent no matter how long his been in the west.

I think its a good thing, it might just keep them within their own yellow nation.

And contrary to what some might think, a urine tiong is more impressed if you can speak english than if you can speak their ching chong crap.

Some Dutch words have become part of the Indonesian vocabulary e.g. Oom, tante,... etc . By the way I read somewhere that Bahasa Indonesia was created so that indonesians had a common language to communicate among the themselves. In Batam I've heard the natives speak dialects that I didn't recognise.

Many Indonesians especialy the Indo Chinese chose to go to Holland when the Dutch were kicked out of Indonesia. I was actually quite surprised that I saw so many asian dutch citizens when I visited Holland Although a minority they were very visible. I saw chinese provision stores, chinese restaurants, the bell boy at the hotel I was staying was chinese. I saw other exotic looking non-chinese asians .
