So much for the Work Life Balance brigade!

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer confirmed the fears of pajama-wearing bloggers everywhere on Monday when she verified that the company is ending its work-from-home policy and ordered everyone into the office. In a memo from the human resources department, the company insisted that face-to-face interactions are necessary to create a more collaborative culture. Although studies have shown that employees are more productive when working from home, Yahoo is not the first to decide that lack of face time is not good for the company: Bank of America last year required that employees in certain roles come back to the office.

i heard HP also have this kind of arrangement.

Actually quite a lot of companies have this and if Singapore is serious about packing 7 m people here, you don't want a daily crush of people going to work everyday...so we have to have more of this. Whats disturbing is that some of the so called 'Progressive work life balance" companies like Yahoo are starting to reverse directions!! Lets see how this turns out.

good point with our unreliable transport system. but last time, when my friend got this kind of arrangement, i will go swimming at his place...:D

My thought is most Singaporeans will be out of work if more of this happen as most will be working from home, but in India, Philippines, China, etc.

Google believes the same as well. There is really nothing magical about working from home. In fact, you lose a lot of contact time when you are at home. People do not work efficient enough if you are not in office. COmmunication face to face is so much better because you can tell from subtle cues if what you are saying has and impact or not. All these are lost if you don't work in an office. Until we can get a perfect replication, with high digital reproduction of the environment working from home not only isolates you but also to what is happening at work as well.

Actually you brought up another interesting point. The reason why people can work from home is due to the internet and phone mobility but now that countries in the region are already wired up...maybe India still got some way to go, there is no advantage for Singapore. In fact the internet and phone charges here are more expensive than those in China, Vietnam..etc. So in essence if you can get the same quality of work from say China, outsource it and they can also work from their homes so you don't need to pay for the infrastructure costs.

This guy already outsourced his own work and earns a profit through it. Singaporean should learn how to do that. If companies can do it, why not workers?

An even better policy is to no more forums n facebook/ twitter during working hours. I'm sure productivity will soar at least 30% overnight.

Actually the correct answer as in everything else is...in the balance. Some days or sometimes u work at home and in others in the office. It's called Work Life Balance.

I support her stand.

Face-to-face contact during office hours.

Body-to-body contact after that, with a good dose of bodily-fluid exchange.
