Ohhhh, I am so touched by what he says, that we are one big familee - the "Singapore familee".

Are we really in this together Mr Lee? You still take $3 million salary after pay cut while many are surviving on a few hundreds a month. Your senior civil servants spends $46k on cooking lessons in Paris, while the poor are relying on $30 monthly food voucher to help subsidise their daily meal.

Your newspaper thinks that it is damn big deal enough to shout about giving $20 more on ang pow money to 275 residents (increased of 55 residents), which amounts $2,750, while Temasek easily lost tens of billions of dollars on failed investments last year.

Are you and your govt really in this together with us? What a joker!

IT WILL be the Government’s most crucial response to the recession when the Budget is unveiled on Jan 22. But as the country waits, another important response should not be forgotten.

How the community reaches out to give extra help and support to fellow citizens in tough times will make Singapore a stronger society, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said yesterday. .
And that is better than being over-reliant on handouts and the Government. .
Mr Lee said: “We’re in this together ... not as individuals or even just as each family on its own, but as one big family which is the Singapore family. But if everything depends on Government schemes and it becomes a matter of bureaucratic organisation and entitlement, I think we will make this impersonal and we will weaken ourselves as a society. .
“And instead of having a sense of mutual support and warmth and comradeship, we will cultivate a sense of reliance and ultimately a society that will not be as strong as it should be.” .
Mr Lee gave this off-the-cuff address at an annual event to distribute hong baos to needy residents in his constituency. This time, at least 275 residents received $100 in cash and a $50 NTUC voucher each — compared to 220 residents and $80 in the red packets last year. .
Things have not been easy for this group. .
One resident said: “I was retrenched. So was my husband last month. Although we should not solely rely on the Government for assistance, we still hope we can find a job through the Government’s help.” .
Another added: “Give money to people to buy things, then businesses (and) the economy can go up.” .
The number of residents in the constituency has also increased by 20 per cent from September to December, said assistant branch secretary for the People’s Action Party Teck Ghee branch, Mr Ng Chiang Wei, who expects even more to come forward after Chinese New Year. .
Mr Lee struck an upbeat note for his residents, though, with the Year of the Ox approaching. He described the animal as strong and, while not very aggressive, “completely dependable”, and added: “So in our quiet way, we’ll see through the Year of the Ox and we’ll come out of it alright, stronger than before and ready to grow and prosper.” CHANNEL NEWSASIA

20% are the people whom they statistically estimated. there should be more who are being left out in the cold or else the flaming of the mp won't have happened.

singaporeans need to express themselves more openly and publicly to walk-about-mps. if not, they take it that everything is A-OK and would continue to pride themselves with camouflaged gladness of the ground.

We all should stay together and support the great PAP in order for us to work together to solve problems. As the saying goes "together we are strong". 3 cheers for our great PAP.

the source of the problem is not giving the fish but teaching peasants to fish. then again, when peasants have already learnt well to fish, the pond is depleted of fish.

then how? that's the problem paps should be trying to solve. our cpfs are loaded and yet in such bad times still could be left untouched. our much bragged about reserves is always boasted as overflowing and yet many are apprehensive whether there would be food at the next meal.

here we are: having so much saving and reserve and yet it's just a figure to show-off and left not untilised. if we couldn't pass the present dilemma, who's going to live until whatever retirement age to using their savings.

if reserves are always kept as reserves without using it in emergency such as now, why are they called reserves?

it's like having a piece of $1000 note infront of you but u r not allowed to use it even if u desperately need money. then that bill is nothing but a piece of worthless paper.

the problems now, paps easily blame it on the world economic crisis. however, when the tide turns for the better, they shall not hesitate to claim credits.

when a hungry man is pleading for food, the immediate solution is to feed him and not preach a host of bombastic gospel. sadly, this is what the paps are doing most of the time - preaching gospel to hungry peasants.

leetahbar your posts here & everywhere will only attract flamers so pls f88k off.

Every country have such unfortunate people around. Our great PAP government will always try possible ways to help them. But do bear in mind that the PAP government can't possibly help everyone as in a long run, people will have the mindset and attitude to always fully rely on the government for whatever problems. People will become lazy and do not work to strive a better prosperous future. Our great PAP government doesn't want such thing to happen.

What the hell are you talking about us being in this together as one big Singapore family.
You poor peasants, do you want your three meals in hawker centre, food court, or restaurant?

:( :o :(

Not when one of your senior civil servants have boasted about going to Paris, France to learn cooking. Not when you allowed Mas Selamat to escape from an ISD jail in February 2008. Not when you allowed GST to soar above everyone's affordability. Not when you allowed public transportation companies- coincidentally all being state-owned monopolies- to raise their ticket fees. Not when you allowed the spending of money on the F1, Flyer and IRs, only to see the F1 crashing into a recession, the Flyer stopping halfway during operation, shops at the flyer suffering from no tourists and high rentals, and IRs, rumoured to have been halted due to lack of money from Sands resort.

With such a track record, poor as it is, and with the simple fact that the government has fudged the numbers in the unemployment rate, and in that the rich-poor gap's resembling a Switzerland-Somalia one, how can he say we are in all in this together?

That guy is practically gasping at straws.

insensitive PAP: Maybe it's time to raise Ministar salary again? considering the high risk involved in public service?

If they ever dare to raise their own salaries, in spite of the global recession, then they deserve to lose more seats in any upcoming election- whether is it this year or in 2 years time.

Let this be a warning for a party dealing in half-lies and half-truths, and completely resorting to BS to cover their political backsides. There's nothing that incenses me more than statements such as that by LHL. It goes to show this guy doesn't deserve to be PM, if not for his special ties.

And where the hell has the $5.4b approved loan to LVS to build the MB IR disappeared to? More than half of the said sum was syndicated by DBS which also involved UOB and OCBC.
