if sdp is so keen to help, why only hepled expelled burmese who took part in protest and not prc workers who couldn't get their pays?

answer: burmese got international media attention while aggireved PRC workers only got the local one. that could be why.;)

Singaporeans arrested in protest over Myanmar activist expulsions
Police Monday arrested two Singaporean activists for staging a protest in support of Myanmar nationals allegedly being forced to leave the city-state for involvement in political activities.

Seelan Palay and Chong Kai Xiong stood outside the Ministry of Manpower's building in the city's business district for about an hour before they were handcuffed by police without showing any resistance.

They wore red T-shirts and held a banner that read "Stop ill-treatment of Burmese activists."

The protest was in support of two Myanmar nationals, Moe Kyaw Thu and Win Kyaw, whose work permits have not been renewed by Singapore, effectively forcing them to leave, Palay said.

He said the two men were among 40 Myanmar nationals who took part in a protest against their country's ruling junta during a summit of Southeast Asian leaders hosted by Singapore in November 2007.

"We can't just stand by as Singaporeans, as personal friends, and watch them being expelled one by one," he said.

Moe Kyaw Thu told AFP that he was required to leave Singapore by January 27. Win Kyaw could not be contacted for comment Monday.

The Ministry of Home Affairs did not immediately reply to emailed queries from AFP on the case of the Myanmar nationals. A few others who took part in the same protest in 2007 have also had their work permit renewals turned down.

Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng in September defended the government's decision not to renew the visas of some Myanmar nationals working or studying in the city-state, saying they were "undesirable" people.

Singapore has eased rules governing protests in a designated public park but it remains illegal elsewhere to hold a public gathering of five or more people without a police permit.

Singapore is home to an estimated 30,000 Myanmar nationals, many of them drawn by jobs as labourers that pay far above what they could earn in their poverty-stricken homeland.

just read this and think what's behind the agenda of that posting. the burmese FTs were here under our country's rules and conditions for alleged activities like work or study. if they breach that, obviously gov has to do something.

say, even if one is allowed here to study but moonlight in part-time job, if he's caught, he would be fined and expelled. the reason he is allowed here is to study and nothing else.

we have to draw the line on the set out law, obey and stand behind it to upheld lawfulness. if everyone chooses to re-write the law to their own liking, then it would not be called LAW.

SDP is not capable and cannot be trusted as compared to our great PAP government. Our great PAP government has clearly brought success to Singapore. Without them, Singapore will not have such improvement and greatness.

sdp pick and choose battles. they help falungong, burmese, but not prc workers, maids. just like their anti-death sentence campaign, they help those drug cases, but not one-eye dragon. that is politics.

watch this video and comment. if the police told them nicely to disperse and they refused, was that against the law?

it seem that the whole drama was pre-planned and staged. the SDP duo arrived with their own video-man.

Well, firstly these 2 activists do not represent SDP's stand, although they have shown support for SDP by participating in SDP's past activities and protests.

That's exactly the problem. It's an image problem and "branding" issue. To the public, just glancing thru the news article, people will somehow put 2 and 2 together and consider these 2 activists to be SDP "people".... SDP really has to make a decision if it wants to be a political organization or an activist organization. Their concerns and missions are quite different.

Secondly, these 2 are not trying to score any political points or win votes. They are merely expressing their own stand with regards to persecution of the Burmese, whom they regard as close friends.

Again, it's a public perception issue. Pick 10 guys off the street and ask them about this incident and I bet you most will link it to SDP!

What Seelan and Kai Xiong have done is to again highlight the way laws in Singapore are selectively applied. Just a couple of weeks ago, 200 china nationals gathered outside MOM in a workers' strike to demand their wages. Not only were they allowed to gather, MOM in fact rendered assistance to them.*
Contrast this with the 2 Singaporean activists who are arrested for speaking out on behalf of their Burmese pals.

Well... personally, I think their actions may have even backfired!

Whether FTs are taking jobs from us, depressing our wages, or whether FTs are welcome by Singaporeans is not the issue. The issue here is how unjust laws are selectively applied against only one kind of dissent -- political opposition.

Furthermore, by refusing to renew work permits and cracking down on activists who highlight the arbitrary eviction of Burmese nationals, the PAP Govt has implicitly sided with the murderous Burmese junta. Hence this is not merely a political issue, but a moral issue as well -- and as such should, in my opinion, concern all Singaporeans.

Er... I think you guys might have to re-read the ground. Quite frankly, most Singaporeans don't think too "chimly". They are more concerns about bread and butter issues most of the time. I suggest SDP should stay away from being seen as "helping" FTs if you want votes from Singaporeans...

*NB: prc workers are here to work, save money and send back to china hometown. they worked but employers defaulted their pays. why didn't SDP concern about their families back in china? in some way, we are chinese. MOM is in charge of labour law. the 2 clowns should have protested IMMIGRATION DEPT or to wong cunt sing. could it be they were also trying to show defiance to the nearby court which charged them recently?

ask yourself this question:

which party is seen linked to ngejay now? there is already conflict of interest using the burmese to grandiose SDP. even if the action seemed right, many couldn't help doubting the real motive behind this drama.

the version from local ST:

Jan 13, 2009
2 held over protest
By Sue-Ann Chia

TWO Singaporeans were arrested yesterday after they staged a protest at the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) in Havelock Road.
Mr Seelan Palay, 24, and Mr Chong Kai Xiong, 27, were protesting against the alleged non-renewal of the work permits of two Myanmar nationals who were involved in political activities here.

Wearing red T-shirts, they stood outside the MOM building at noon, with placards around their necks that read 'Stop ill-treatment of Burmese activists'. They were arrested about an hour later for 'criminal trespass' and released yesterday evening on bail.

The Government said both men 'repeatedly defied orders from MOM's security personnel to leave the premises'. Police were called in for help against their trespass, said a statement from MOM and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) yesterday.

In an online posting, Mr Palay identified the two Myanmar nationals whose cause he had taken up as Mr Moe Kyaw Thu and Mr Win Kyaw. Both men, he added, were part of a group of Myanmar nationals who took part in a protest march against their country's ruling junta during the Asean summit here in 2007.

It is not the first time Mr Palay, a visual artist, and Mr Chong, a software programmer, have had brushes with the law.

Last March, they were among a group of people arrested for taking part in an illegal assembly outside Parliament House. The trial is still ongoing.

Yesterday's protest, however, was their first for Myanmar nationals working in Singapore, some of whom had been in the news in recent months for failing to get their work passes renewed.

Most are part of the Overseas Burmese Patriots group that has organised protests here against its home government.

The MHA and MOM, in their statement, said foreigners are welcome to work and live here, as well as organise political activities as long as they abide by Singapore laws. But some Myanmar nationals here do not observe the 'basic obligation of respecting the laws of the land and the local sensitivities of its people'.

'They have shown in their actions and attitude a wilful disregard and contempt for the law and the Singapore authorities.'

Some acted in this manner even though they have benefited from education subsidies and Singaporeans' hospitality, and 'even demand the right to stay here as if it is a personal entitlement'.

These foreigners have also applied political pressure through the media and agitated foreign public opinion against the Singapore authorities to compel the country to give in to their demands. 'These persons are not welcomed in Singapore. They should leave Singapore once their existing passes expire.'

Noting that Singapore laws apply equally to everyone, they said: 'No one is allowed to break the law with impunity regardless of how morally superior he thinks his cause is.'

words in red show the impartiality of the law. those in bold was the comment from sgp gov. depending on how neutral or prejudiced one is, different opinions and belief are bound to surface.

for this instance, our gov could be correct to expell them who could have been "adulterated by sdp's diabolical agenda".

as usual, a thread started by ngejay in 3in1kopitiam was one-sided and hide the truth and actual agenda beneath the duo sdp clowns arrested.

how to convince peasants and win their supports when everytime their conveying of message hide so many facts? :oIo:

oh yes, SDP pick and choose battles indeed.

They choose on topics that foregin press and NGOs would pay attention to and ignore actual plight that singaporeans actually do talk about in the coffeeshops.

so are they serving singaporeans or foregin media interest, which i have notice most of the time dont seem to be very interested most of the time.?

Very simple. SDP is as anti PRC as their Nair supporter. They think all PRCs are communists.

Strange enough.

We have threads complaining FTs/FWs snatching locals ricebowls.
How they deprive locals opportunity

but yet, we have SDP helping FTs/FWs. to stay in Singapore when
they violate the rules in the 1st place?

Seriously, did SDP know its priority right, especially the current job crisis?

If SDP is fighting for Singaporeans, lower incomes, jobless blah blah...
at least i can sympathies the 2 activists.....but but but...Burmese??

 :o
