LAW and Foreign Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam yesterday said the Government has issued its Population White Paper now to spur serious discussion on what might happen in 20 years' time.

He stressed that a population of up to 6.9 million by 2030 is not a target but a possibility that a responsible government must plan for.

Speaking to reporters at a hongbao presentation event in his Chong Pang ward, he said it was possible to predict with some certainty what would take place over the next five to seven years. Beyond that, the projections in the paper are based on a broad range of assumptions.

The paper projects a population of 6.5 million to 6.9 million by 2030, economic growth of 3 per cent to 5 per cent up to 2020, and 2 per cent to 3 per cent thereafter to 2030.

A major flaw in the 6.9 million population policy is forgotten. People are facing pressing problems today. How to get to work on time so that they can fulfill important tasks to keep their jobs. Student having to wait more than 30 minutes to catch a bus to go home after a tiring day at school. Singapore workers getting replaced by cheap foreign workers that don't need to go for in-camp training. How to afford flats and get married ? How to afford kids ? How to care for the kids when both parents have to work ?????????????????????? The gov't have not been able to solve the problems ppl are facing today. If they have so many problems TODAY which they have admitted their failure, I have serious doubts they have to ability to govern 6.9 million in 2030.

Maybe they should debate having an independent Labour Union that have teeth to fight for the Singapore Workers ? Not like the existing NTUC that just parrot gov't policy that is pro-business and not pro-citizens.

As far as I concern, I see more value to have a serious discussion on what I am going to have for lunch today than discussing 6.9 million by 2030. These guys have nothing better to do or what ?
