An Israeli intelligence source has confirmed Iran’s Fordow underground nuclear uranium enrichment facility sustained major damage in a “mega explosion” that occurred last week.

Fordow, which contains at least 2,700 centrifuges for uranium enrichment, is located deep beneath a mountain near the Iranian city of Qom.

Some 200 workers were trapped inside the facility at the time, according to a report published Monday by The Times, a UK-based newspaper.

The report quoted an Israeli official as saying “We’re still in the early stages of trying to comprehend what happened and the extend of its significance.” The source added that it was not yet known whether the explosion was “an act of sabotage or incidental.”

The official declined to reveal whether Israeli aircraft had been in the vicinity at the time of the explosion.

From Russia Today :

Contradictory reports of an explosion at Iran’s uranium enrichment site have been emerging. Iran denies it ever happened, calling it “Western propaganda” while Israel confirms it, putting tensions around upcoming nuclear talks.

Reports of the explosion at the underground Fordow plant, near the city of Qom, central-northern Iran, originally surfaced on Friday.

Iran has denied the reports, while Israel and some of US media reported that the explosion occurred and caused significant damage.

The West has maintained that the Fordow plant (which was discovered in 2009) has been producing uranium enriched to 20 per cent fissile purity since late 2011, compared to the 3.5 per cent level required for nuclear energy plants, and has been operating 700 centrifuges there since the start of the year.

While Israeli intelligence has confirmed that the explosion occurred and caused serious damage, but the area had not been evacuated, The Sunday Times reported.
Israel is still in the "preliminary stages of understanding what happened and how significant it is," the UK newspaper quoted one official as saying. It is still unclear whether the explosion was “sabotage or an accident”.

Another source within Israeli intelligence has confirmed the same to The Times of London.
“Israel believes the Iranians have not evacuated the surrounding area. It is unclear whether that is because no harmful substances have been released, or because Tehran is trying to avoid sparking panic among residents,” the source said.

The first to report about the explosion was Reza Kahlili for WND.com. The explosion “destroyed much of the installation and trapped about 240 personnel deep underground” including scientists and workers, many of whom are foreign nationals, Kahlili wrote.

“The blast shook facilities within a radius of three miles. Security forces have enforced a no-traffic radius of 15 miles, and the Tehran-Qom highway was shut down for several hours after the blast,” the report said.

The emergency exits have collapsed at the site and regime fears more loss of life due to possible radiation.

Of course sabotage. Or else how Israel can confirm? You know who did it.

Dr Ali Reza Nourizadeh, a senior researcher and director of the Centre for Arab & Iranian Studies in London, confirmed during a telephone interview with Missing Peace that an explosion has occurred in the underground uranium enrichment facility in Fordow Iran.

Nourizadeh, who is a commentator for Deutsche Welle and the Voice of America and has an extensive network of contacts in Iran, told us that the explosion has caused relatively little damage to the uranium enrichment facility itself but that the blast has blocked the entrance to Fordow. He confirmed that more than 200 personnel are trapped in the plant and that there is a unknown number of casualties.

He said that since the blast the city of Qom, where Fordow is located, has been encircled by forces of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. He also reported that today the regime arrested between eight and twelve Iranian journalists who where accused of collaborating with foreign media. Nourizadeh said that local journalists have been responsible for leaking information about the incident in Fordow. Their computers and other equipment has been confiscated.

Nourizadeh dismissed reports about an imminent Iranian retaliation against Israel via Hezbollah. He said that Iran will not retaliate at this point of time, but it could be that Hezbollah will heat up the border with Israel for reasons more related to the Syrian civil war.

Meanwhile Israeli TV channel 10 reported that the US government has officially denied that an explosion took place Fordow.

U.S. military technology would be absolutely necessary to carry out such a strike on Fordow, which is buried beneath 300 feet of concrete. Due to Iran’s presence over several dangerous fault lines, the country has developed some of most robust anti-earthquake engineering technology in the world. Therefore, the only weapon that could externally penetrate and inflict damage on Fordow is the U.S.’ Massive Ordnance Penetrator, the heaviest bomb in the U.S. arsenal, designed with the express purpose of assaulting underground, impregnably-fortified structures. Throughout 2012, the bomb underwent refinement until, merely two weeks ago, Boeing announced that the bomb now has the capability to power through 200 ft of concrete before exploding. Given the newly refined Massive Ordnance Penetrator and Barak’s recent comments, it seems very likely that this was an external strike, rather than the result of an internal malfunction.

Predictably, the Iranian regime has denied an explosion ever occurred, yet this is how it has repeatedly responded to just about every attack on its military or nuclear operations. In 2010, Iran denied that the infamous Stuxnet virus had failed to reach the centrifuges that it targeted to render them inoperable, despite the fact that Iranian scientists took thousands of centrifuges offline, which the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed. In 2012, the U.S. finally confirmed that the virus, named Operation Olympic Games, was manufactured in the U.S. with Israeli support dating back to the Bush administration.

In November 2011, the regime drastically understated the extent of the damage a military base roughly 30 miles from Iran suffered in an explosion that they claimed was accidental. A potential suspect was the Mujahideen e-Khalq (MEK), or the People’s Mujahideen of Iran, which is opposed to Iran’s Islamist regime. However, the group uncharacteristically did not take credit for the attack, and has not officially been armed since 2003. Furthermore, the regime was rather public about the research conducted at the base, which was geared at developing a missile supposedly capable of targeting Israel. Additionally, General Hassan Tehrani Moghaddam, a key player in the country’s missile program, was visiting the base at the time of the attack. As such, the possibility of Israeli covert operations cannot be overlooked. This was further corroborated by various media sources at the time, which reported the possibility of Mossad involvement, allegations which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other officials refused to comment on.

It is entirely possible that Israel used MEK to carry out these attacks. One element of the shadow war that Iran has been unable to deny are the targeted murders of its nuclear scientists. U.S. officials have leaked to the press that Israel has very close relations with MEK, which carried out these murders. The Mossad even trains and arms members of the group in Israel itself.

Clearly the attack on the Fordow nuclear facility is a logical next step in a series of covert operations used by the U.S. and Israel against Iran’s nuclear program. Covert operations alone will not prevent Iran from going nuclear, but they could severely increase the length of time it will take for that to happen.

This is very good news indeed,,,if the scientist are killed and this nuclear power plant becomes scrap,,it will set back their nuclear program by 5 to 10 years,,and if radiation leaks and the people are affected,,,the people will demand that nuclear power be stopped,,,it will play the people against the government and what is even better is the USA dont even have to invade,,,,

This case sounds like the bomb was smuggled into the nuclear facility, disguised as one of equipment. The Iranians can hid their nuclear plants underground beyond the range of missiles and air strikes, but there is no way they can avoid the Jews and Americans from destroying them.

yah, its all bullshit to preserve the reliance on Oil..........

the problem is replacing with nuclear with oil is just as suicidal as depending on oil in the 1st place,,,nuclear has too many problems,,,we should invest more in making renewable s more efficient and cheaper..
