From Straits Times live blogging:
Now PM turns to WP chief Low Thia Khiang, who blamed the govt for being interested in profits and raising the cost of many public services.
PM Lee says it is important to let private sector have a role, if govt
solves every problem than why did Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping have to upturn so many things Mao believed in and depend on open markets?
“If Goverment can do everything than North Korea will be most prosperous in the world!”
Lee Hsien Loong is either totally missing the point, or he is trying to obfuscate and confuse the voters. He thinks people are still simple minded enough to believe whatever he says.
Of course it is important to let the private sector have a role. Of course "open markets" are good.
But is the current system one where there is an "open market"?? Is there real competition?
Do you have a choice of utilities provider? SP Services makes more than $7 bn profit each year thanks to its absolute monopoly. Is this an open market?
SMRT has a complete monopoly of public transport and has also got a stake in the Taxi business, alongside Comfort DelGro (another GLC). Is this an open market?
Is it possible for you to sign up for a landline from anyone other than SingTel or StarHub both of which are GLCs?
Fact of the matter is that they are NOT operating under free market conditions, they are acting as monopolists or colluders who simply SQUEEZE the shit out of the consumers for their own benefit!
