Experts say move may cause first-timers without children to further delay being parents
SINGAPORE — Intended to give more first-time buyers with children a better chance of getting a flat — and hence boost the birth rate — the Government’s plan to set aside 30 per cent of new housing supply for this group may result in the opposite effect, say analysts.
As this puts first-timers without children at the back of the queue for Housing and Development Board (HDB) flats, it may delay their plans to have children, they said.
However, the schemes’ impact may be limited, said the National Family Council, citing its surveys which show that Singaporeans want a roof over their heads first before having children.
Mr Colin Tan, Director and Head of Research and Consultancy at Chesterton Suntec International, said that if the number of first timers with children grows after the schemes are implemented, it may affect availability and waiting time for new flats.
