10. Singapore started the world’s first international organization for toilets
Around here, cleanliness is next to godliness – and no one believes it more than Jack Sim, who founded the World Toilet Organisation (WTO) in 2001. Its goal is to provide proper sanitation to less developed areas of the world and you know, make sure that no one gets away without flushing.
9. Singapore is in the wrong time zone
If you thought Singapore was eight hours past Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), guess again. Local clocks were originally set at GMT +7.30, but following Peninsula Malaysia’s steps to match East Malaysia’s timezone in 1982, Singapore adopted GMT +8.00 as our standard time. So yes, that means you’re actually half an hour younger than you originally thought.
8. The Chilli Crab is one of the world’s iconic dishes
Trust Singapore to make it on the map for its food. Created in 1950 by Madam Cher Yam Tian (despite claims by the Malaysian Tourism Minister), the Chilli Crab has earned rave reviews everywhere. It was even ranked as one of the World’s 7 Iconic Dishes by popular travel guide book Lonely Planet.
7. Orchard Road was ranked as the No. 1 shopping avenue in the world
If you’re tired of that snooty friend who keeps boasting about shopping in Paris, here’s something to throw back at her. A Parisian market consulting company has rated Singapore’s Orchard Road as the best shopping district in the world, beating out competition from London and the famed Champs Elysées in Paris. So if you haven’t been shopping in Paris yet, you’re probably not missing out on much.
6. Singaporeans can vote in the British Elections
Who would’ve thought eh? As Singapore is a member of the Commonwealth, Singaporean citizens have the right to vote in all elections in the United Kingdom. They can even stand for election in the British House of Commons. In other words, you could campaign to be an MP of a British constituency if you wanted.
5. Singapore also happens to be a ghost town in the Mid-West
I know what you’re thinking – with over 5 million citizens, Singapore hardly seems like a ghost town. But apparently there’s a small town in Michigan with our namesake. In 1871, the town was razed to the ground by fires that swept through the American Northern Midwest.
4. Singapore is home to the fastest walkers in the world
A study conducted in 2007 revealed that Singaporeans are the fastest walkers, clocking the quickest times to stride across an 18-metre stretch of pavement. And you wondered why you nearly got trampled to death while waiting to board the train this morning.

You heard that right, 63 separate islands, not one. Most of the islands are largely uninhabited and used for military training exercises or industrial companies though.

When the Singapore Zoo said that you could get up close and personal with the animals, they weren’t kidding. According to its website, the Singapore Zoo is the only place in the world where you can hang out with Orang Utans while having breakfast.

Now how’s this for style? Our very own Changi Airport has free movie theatres in Terminals 2 and 3, which screen films 24/7 free-of-charge. If run-of-the-mill 2D movies won’t do it for you, check out the 4D cinema in Terminal 3, which has motion simulators. No popcorn included though.

Well what do we know lol. I have to confess there is a lot of things I do not know about good ol' Singapore. I know only a few but No. 5 and 10 was a real surprise.
