Besides the PAP and WP, there are at least three other political parties that have indicated an interest in contesting Punggol East SMC. They are the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA), and the Reform Party (RP). Even former Singapore People’s Party (SPP) candidate Benjamin Pwee has also expressed an inclination to throw his hat into the ring as an independent candidate.

My immediate reading of the situation is that it is very unlikely we will see a 5 or 6 way fight if and when the by-election is called. I strongly suspect some parties will withdraw voluntarily before nomination day, either due to concessionary talks with other parties, or of their own accord should they realize they are the underdogs and stand a high chance of being completely sidelined.

The RP and SDA have little credibility, after their poor showing in the last General Elections despite the groundswell against the incumbent PAP. Mr Desmond Lim lost his deposit in a 3 cornered fight in the same SMC, barely garnering 5% of the votes.

The SDP is much better positioned with a better slate of potential candidates and a much improved party image after the 2011 elections.

But it still remains to be seen whether SDP can edge out WP in a multi-cornered contest, despite a series of fumbles the WP made after the last GE, from making a mess of the ministerial salary debate, to plagiarism, and finally to being embroiled in a scandal. It should be duly noted that despite these fumbles, WP retained Hougang SMC with 62% of the votes, an impressive victory by itself.

Despite these drawbacks, contesting parties will have a chance to showcase their political ideologies, connect with residents, and make themselves visible. It is a good opportunity for parties to get a share of the media spotlight and market themselves to the electorate. A good campaign now may pay dividends in the next GE slated for 2016.

It is also possible that out of this cacophony, some agreements or even informal alliances will be forged that will pave the way for better electoral cooperation.

In the opposition camp, the elephant in the room, of course, the Worker’s Party (WP). Other opposition parties will be looking for ways to show that they are strong enough to challenge WP’s claims on constituencies and that the WP does not have a monopoly on good candidates or good party branding.

The National Solidarity Party (NSP) failed to stand up to WP in Moulmein-Kallang in the run-up to GE2011 and was forced to retreat. This time, opposition parties will be looking to send WP a message that they will not be so easily cowed and that their stakes and claims must also be taken seriously.

In this sense, a multi-cornered fight may be good for the opposition as a whole in the long run, even though it may be good for the PAP in the short run.

Perhaps then, our opposition parties have indeed begun to take a long term view of the political situation and strategize for the future.

Therefore, it is my wish that we will have a clean, rambunctious, multi-cornered fight in Punggol East. It will be a chance to see what each opposition party is truly made of.

It is time to send WP a message that other parties can only put up good candidates and that other parties are equally capable of putting up a good electoral contest.

A multicornered fight will be good for the opposition in the long run even though it may benefit PAP in the short run.

Any party that wishes to grow must contest elections, even multi-cornered elections if need be.

You can't have a clean or fair fight with the PAP around.

Multi-cornered = might as well cancel the by-election and declare the PAP victorious.

I do not think one should stop at Punggol East. There should be multi-cornered contests in ALL constituencies at the next GE.
I am quite sure that this would be welcome by many.

The PAP always fights dirty doesn't mean we shouldn't contest. Once the popularity of PAP drops below a critical level, even a multi-cornered fight cannot automatically bring victory to PAP.

Of course, other than you, the rest of the 60.1% will welcome it.

Among all oppo parties WP has the strongest brandname and if all other things being equal then it should be allowed to field its candidate to go one-on-one with the PAP. But what if the WP candidate so nominated is not as strong or capable when others can offer a 'better' choice? Don't forget WP does not have monopoly over all oppo talent and one good example is Hazel Poa of NSP. A Cambridge Uni graduate and being moderate surely she can be accepted by most conservative voters...

If the percentage is still 60.1% then that remains a sizeable majority. Isn't that what democracy is all about?
If there are still so many small opposition parties then let there be multi-cornered fights in ALL constituencies at the next GE.
Do not stop at Punggol East just to satisfy the vanity of a few people. I am NOT into those individuals who seek vanity. I am into proper politics.

This is the normalization of SG politics

Multi corner fights will be the norm in the future

Its time we all got used to it

If SDP is so good and and any good candidates, why they always lose and alway come last?

SDP, fcuk off from punggol east.

The other opposition parties have no choice but to contest in Punggol. You will do that too even if you know you are likely to lose the deposit.
The Pandora's box had been opened by WP, it was a foolish and unnecessary move but they did it anyway with arrogance. The consequences must be played out now.

What you said is true, but elections is about a whole team.

Party machinery has always been more important than the individual candidate, even in the US.

Otherwise, you are better off staying as an independent.

Suddenly everyone wanted a small piece of the crumb accidentally dropped by PAP.

:rolleyes:Anyone who argues for a "clean" contest when it comes to politics clearly does not know what they are talking about. There will be a contest -- a multi-cornered contest -- and it need not be clean. Those who cannot stand the heat should stay out of the kitchen.

If you are talking about "clean" meaning upright and honest, it is only the PAP who won't play clean. They have control of the state media and apparatus. As what we have seen for the last 40 years, it's going to be the nothing-new ugly shine on all 5 if they contest especially on WP and SDP candidates.

Why refer only to the MSM? Now some are using online media to malign a number of opposition parties. And the maligning is done by the jealous and envious. Most people know who these individuals are and who they support. Since this is the road that is taken, then fine. People cannot expect that the online m&d-slinging will simply be in one direction. When the heavy online artillery is turned their direction they then want to make a call for a "clean contest"? Who are they kidding?!

Quite so, the road to power is neither a linear nor a smooth one. Let them who wants it learn this lesson well

If this was the GE or a GRC BE, I would be very eager for the opposition party to win.

But if there is a BE for Punggol East SMC, I'm actually looking forward to a multi cornered fight. Let 2 or 3 opposition parties put out their strongest possible candidate and see what happens. Even if the pap wins, see which opposition party gets the highest % of votes. Let's also observe how the parties and the key individuals within the parties approach the elections both pre and post nomination day.

And if by some chance an opposition candidate wins in a multi cornered fight, wouldn't that be just hilarious and great? :D
