China lands high-tech J-15 jet on new carrier

Chinese are playing smart and using this old Soviet hulk to learn the operating dynamics of a carrier. These guys have to start from scratch and smartest thing they did was to buy this old carrier. It does not matter who copies who. What matters is to flatten the learning curve and put out a credible carrier/ aircraft/jet engine within the next 10 years. US missile technology or even NASA putting man on moon was based on WW2 Nazi research. After WW2, half of the german engineers went to USSR and the other went to US. So in effect, US was copying German design.

What Chinese have on their side is their huge economy/GDP, industrial complex, $$$ and determination and engineers. I look around and I do not see lack of smart Chinese engineers. So now they copy then they make improvements and in the future come out with their own technology.

I doubt PRC can catch up with the top superpowers within our lifetimes. BUT they need to do it. Reason - they cannot afford not to. They have learnt their lesson very well from being isolated from the rest of the world (and their development) and paid a very heavy price for it. So whether they copy or develop their own, they have to.

And in so doing, the other powers will have to keep on their toes as well. At the end of the day, it is good for all nations of the world.

At least, they are able to compete with India on their navies capability. China may need Russia's help to fend US away from their target (islands near the Philippines).

unless prc can design and manufacture a proper aviation engine, it will be difficult for them to even achieve tactical air superiority. i cannot see USA as PRC number 1 competitor as both need each other too much and there nothing to gain when PRC and USA meet over the empty pacific ocean for show down.
as good as prc new frontline air assets are, the number are too few wheras USA hundreds if not thousands of f15/16/18 mothballed in arizona desert while only maintaining only a thousand of the most modern tactical aircrafts in active and national reserve units. PRC still have plenty of mig21 in active service which cannot even match the f16a/b.

What other country other than USA, ussr have ever gone to space? Canada, OZ and other 1st world nations have never been to space before yet if they were to somehow go to space today would you say they were too slow? The fact of the matter is china has managed to catch up what about india? What about mudland? When will india ever go to space for example?

Your view is not entirely correct about the term "superpower." That I have to disagree. The PRC army is only good at quelling internal unrest. They have hardly fought a full war for decades. The last time they battled with Vietnam, and that was with a weakened enemy, using WW2 tactics. PRC Army huge annual budget is largely wasted on corruption and showcase projects.

On the other hand, the USA has regular wars to update their doctrine and technology. The US military is now expert in disrupting communications and precision strikes. The modern warfare is won on these two. So long as all the wars are fought outside of China soil, there is no way China can win. Even Japan can beat China's navy to a pulp. The current Chinese leaders know this, so they will never try anything stupid, because losing a war with foreign power is going to cost them their legitimacy to rule China.

If the USA is to couch the war as against the CCP and not China people, we may even find the Chinese masses cheering for team USA.

A lot of people can believe what they want to, but the way I see it, China even though considered 2nd superpower is stil a long way off - in terms of technological development. Space exploration - what about probes to Mars, Venus, the asteroid belt, outer solar system? Navy? Take a look at Nippon's first before even comparing with Old Uncle Sam's.

Other than PRC, nobodyelse has the will nor the purpose to go ballistic on military spending (Peesai might if she has the means).

China's main problem today is her own internal social gap, she probably has less problem dealing with external issues than internal ones, and Uncle Sam's woes are more likely the likes of Al-Qaeda and bros than an upcoming sleeping giant of the Land of Ah Tiongs. For those military junkies inspired by weapon tech between the big boys, keep plugging on your keyboard wargames.

My fear is not a WW3 type scenario but the day Chinese consumer market develops to a point where USA only wants to trade with PRC and vice versa and these two forget about the rest of the world. Then we're all in shit. As it is when we import some products from USA which PRC also buys, we get little attention or priority from the exporters.

It's really strange that no matter what china has achieved it's always put down. Hey coming up as number 2 after all this time from the 70s is a very good achievement. No other first world country is number 2 fyi. It's not germany, nor oz, nor some other country.

It's really odd because suppose if it was some other country say india for eg that was in the same position as china. The ppl condemning it would change 180 and be praising them to the skies. If you notice other countries that have accomplished much less or accomplished nothing at all get praised to the skies yet no matter how much china has accomplished is always put down. Absolutely ridiculous.

Sorry my bad. You are right about the capabilities of the J15. Unless it has been tested in battle, we should doubt the claims they made.

OK but then again the fact of the matter is other than china, usa and ussr no other country has been to space and the other countries like germany, japan have all been first world for a long time.
