Johor Bahru
JULY 2012
Madam Rita Zahara, 37, was carjacked by two men, armed with a gun and knife, who drove off with her two young children, younger sister and maid still inside.
She had stopped by a roadside stall in Larkin, Johor, just past midnight to buy fruits while on her way back to Singapore.
The men then threatened to kill her family if she failed to pay a ransom.
When she did not pay up, they dumped the four hostages by a roadside in Ulu Tiram and fled with the car and valuables totalling $78,000.
Johor police later recovered the car and arrested three men. In August, two of them, aged 33 and 37, were jailed eight years and ordered to be caned thrice after they pleaded guilty to gang robbery. Their accomplice, 45, was sentenced to seven years' jail.
JUNE 2012
Mr Koh Teck Huat, 40, was fatally shot at the lift lobby of Taman Desa Tebrau condominium in Johor Baru (JB).
Several shots were fired from a lowered window of a slow-moving multi-purpose vehicle at the carpark.
One bullet pierced the back of his neck, killing him.
Police later found drugs in a bag Mr Koh was carrying and also in his apartment. His girlfriend was later arrested for drug-related offences.
APRIL 2012
Mr Chang Jeng Wei, 49, who lived in JB, was stabbed to death at a food court after a gang negotiation went wrong.
A man from the other gang headed straight for Mr Chang and plunged a knife into his chest.
