is it a good idea to keep separate disk for different categories? would be less risky. otherwise, if the hdd kaput, all gone. charm sze hor. got 3 generations backup?

Yes if your data is important to you...pro photographer, designer etc, or just simply family photos which mean alot to you...better use a HD server and Raid it...or a off the shelf twin drive Raid HD...if still not convince...get a bluray burner n back up hardcopy as well...
