LianHe ZaoBao, Tamil Murasu and The Business Times, which also saw growth last year, contracted in 2012.

For the first time in its report, Singapore Press Holdings have combined the circulation figures of The Straits Times and The Sunday Times.

The drop is even more significant if you consider the 20% increase in population since 2007

All the newspapers that come under one roof is root cause of decline in readership. All are like PAP newslettters, not newspapers.

CHEY! 4% - 9% drop nothing compared to those investment drops in Temasek and GIC la. So compare to them SPH gained, alamak why SPH prostitutes never spin like that ah?

newspapers are still useful for pet droppings. there will still be some demand when more sinkies start to adopt pets. :p

Well, you have tipped them on how to spin. These prostitutes might actually do it.:D

Be warned bro. In Siam, please look at who's face is on the paper before the droppings drop. Could easily get 15 years in Bangkok Hilton if dropped on the wrong faces.

Keep in mind these numbers are also bumped up by compulsory subscription in schools. Every single primary school student has to order a copy of ST in order to get the Red Dot attachment that is printed only for students once a week. I am disgusted when I see students dumping the main section just to get the Red Dot that they need for doing their homework. Its like dumping the Mac meal, after paying for it to buy the Hallo Kitty doll.

anyone knows how many primary school going students there are?

Dear Leepotism,
Singapore citizens + PR increase tremendously but SPH cirulation is decreasing. This can only point to 1 major factor: New citizens do not support SPH.
How can new citizens integrate into Singapore society if they dont buy and read newspers

Use your brain. There is so much more competition nowadays. Circulation of Today and Mypaper as well as online sites like ChannelNewsAsia to choose from no need to stick with SPH only

You must be from Braddell brothel. Today, mypaper and CNA already widely available in 2007. And the main newspapers from SPH are the only effective tools for the Leegime to spin their propaganda, since the convoluted public policies need a lot of spinning to shaft them down the throats of the masses.

At the rate of decline of readership, by 2016, probably less than one quarter of all voters will read the Braddell brothel spiel on a regular basis. Mediacorp viewership is also dropping steadily. The Leegime has to be very worried.

Print media decline is a worldwide phenomenon. It is a reflection of the wired up World and people able to get the latest news on demand. Because SPH is a monopoly, there is still a dependency for local content but not so for the younger generation. They seem able to get by with social networks which carry news by interaction.

do they even have access to the net? Even the revered New York Times know that they are dying. In fact they made a movie about it. "Page One : Inside the New York Times" show lay offs, loss of exposes to Wikileaks etc etc. This movie is worth your time.

All this is quite true. But do the figures include paid subscribers to the digital edition of the ST? I believe that since last year ST also had a a digital version for the iPad too.

The New York Times has a growing number of paid online subscribers, now around half a million. While circulation for the actual paper version of the NYT may be dropping, actual readership may be remaining about the same due to the online version. In other words, it's a migration from paper to digital platforms for the same MSM.

if the newspaper provide neutral reporting and excellent editorials that adds value without being a propaganda mouthpiece, there will eventually be sufficient revenue to support the paper. Afterall it does take money to pay for the reporters and infrastructure.

But for braddell brothel, their readership will continue to decline rapidly as the Leegime is not allowing them to move towards propaganda-free journalism, and the cost of a tablet is going to be lower than the annual subscription to shit times. Even retirees are switching out when their kids buy them iPads as birthday gifts.

The past decade sharp rise in population merely helps to mask the rapidity of declining readership.
