they learned some tricks from counter-terrorism and terrorists. instead of sending emails to each other, they created folders a.k.a. "dropboxes" in so called "anonymous" email accounts and shared with each other passwords to all these accounts. they would type their messages and save them as drafts in the folders without sending them. to read these messages, either one could log into these accounts to check the drafts. that way, nothing was sent, nothing was received, and nothing could be intercepted. the whole thing unravelled when the fbi traced threatening emails to an anonymous (gmail) account which led to broadwell's computer, and in that account and a series of associated accounts they found the folders with messages in draft.
