What make Japan and South Korea stand out from the rest of Asia? How can the relatively smaller European nations like Switzerland, Sweden or Finland compete so well with their larger counterparts in France, the U.K. and Italy? What enable Singapore, a tiny island, to become a dominant force in Southeast Asia? Why is Israel able to thrive in face of hostilities from nearly one-fourth of the world?

mit-scientists-jump-r.jpg

It all boiled down to the intellectual capabilities of their people, and the determination to pursue a higher level of science and technologies.

So how can you raise the ingenuity of your people, power up the industrial and economic strength of your nation, and move ahead to beat the more-than-200-countries-and-territories in competition? Allocate more resources to research and development (R&D), build up a class of intelligentsia, and inspire a culture of new knowledge creation into the society.

Across the globe, in 2012, which nations dedicate most of their GDP expenditures onto R&D (GERD), prioritizing most on the scientific and technological development in the country?

2qv5rp4.jpg

Israel topped the GDP expenditures on R&D (GERD) ranking for more than a decade now

1. Israel
Percentage of GDP spent on R&D: 4.20%

2. Finland
Percentage of GDP spent on R&D: 3.80%

3. Sweden
Percentage of GDP spent on R&D: 3.62%

4. Japan
Percentage of GDP spent on R&D: 3.48%

5. South Korea
Percentage of GDP spent on R&D: 3.45%

6. Denmark
Percentage of GDP spent on R&D: 3.08%

7. Switzerland
Percentage of GDP spent on R&D: 3.00%

8. Germany
Percentage of GDP spent on R&D: 2.87%

9. United States
Percentage of GDP spent on R&D: 2.85%

10. Qatar
Percentage of GDP spent on R&D: 2.80%
*Note: Thanks to the gas boom, Qatar achieved the world's highest GDP per capita this year. The country put forward a sudden spike in its 2012 R&D spending, catapulting itself from 61 into the top 10. In contrast with the more technological-established nations in the list however, it may take several years to transform Qatar into a truly advanced state.

11. Austria
Percentage of GDP spent on R&D: 2.75%

12. Singapore
Percentage of GDP spent on R&D: 2.65%

13. Taiwan

R&D spending among the top, yet SG produced nothing noteworthy.

first locally developed phase 3 clinical drugs, very selective anti cancer drug.

learn to read and interact with top level players more before you make such comments. off hand i can think of a few others ground breaking one seriously - database storage using salt which way more efficient than conventional method. http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9220873/Table_salt_found_to_boost_data_storage_density

Think Star Wars, Discovery Channel, etc and Singapore is there progressing. There are many things happening here we are not aware of but I am confident the government is doing something right, at least we are getting more brains into the country than the other way round.

Singaporeans don't care for accountability so why should they care? 皇帝不急太监急?

There is another contribution also from mevotex about Singapore and I should make another thread on it and I hope it might change your perception.

He said "noteworthy", didn't he? You wanna talk about "top level players"? Cite one example of a sinkie patented drug with sales of at least 100 million USD. I concur with what Mojito said: SG produces nothing noteworthy.

Not gonna change my perception when reality corresponds to it. Perhaps you might have a better chance of convincing me if you argued your own case instead of regurgitating from others the way bloody sinkies do.

Ministers' salaries lumber one but produced nothing worth mentioning.

Indeed. Look around your house. How many useful Sinkie innovations can you find?

Actually vamjok is right.

Every time I step into the mall, I get a welcome message suggesting what I should do.

Every time I use NETS to do grocery shopping, the banks take 0.5% from the merchant and IRAS 7% from me.

Every other day I get a call or an SMS asking me if I want another loan or a credit card.

Singapore excels in this sort of innovation.

If you say I am regurgitating from others the innovations done by Singapore, you are right. Then again I am no expert on the latest developments in fields I have no interests in. What is best is to read up on news and reports done by researchers and those who have more knowledge as they have special interests in the subject.

I am also no lackey of the PAP government and answers to no one. Neither do I have any interest in convincing those who have differing views. I would prefer to say I would like to share what I learnt and also learn from others who wants to share what they know.

Can't be. Singapore is the best country in the world, bar none.

I will not minced words with you but if you cut out the sarcastic comments then we can have a discussion or chat if you will. Not all is good and not all is bad about Singapore. Bear that in mind otherwise I will not want to engage with you any further than this.

It is getting late but I can point out some products from a local company that find its way into the average home. The company is AZTECH. The company makes Home-plugs, Internet over Coax modems, ADSL modems etc.

Home-plug is used to carry Internet signals over the home power line and is fairly commonly used. Internet over coax modem essentially does the same thing but over the cable that carries your TV signal. ADSL modems is the modem you use to bring Internet into your home if you do not subscribe to the fibre connection of OpenNet.
