outlets[/h]
November 5th, 2012 |
Author: Editorial
The Singapore Police Force (SPF) have released a media
statement yesterday (4 Nov) saying that they have arrested a syndicate of 5 male
Chinese nationals, aged 26 to 40 years old for series of theft at the various
retails outlets in Singapore.
Since last month Oct, several cases of thefts were committed by Chinese
nationals at various retail outlets in Orchard Road, Thomson Road, Bayfront
Avenue, Rochor Road and Sentosa vicinity.
The suspects who acted in group of 2-3 will approach the retail outlets to
make payment with S$100 or S$1000 big notes for items of negligible value. While
the staff (i.e, the victim) of the outlet is engrossed in calculating the change
to return to the suspect, his accomplices will distract the victim by engaging
her in a conversation.
In the course of the conversation, the suspect will produce the exact amount
for the purchase and retrieve the larger note handed to the staff earlier. The
suspect and his accomplices will then continue to distract and confuse the staff
into returning the “change” for the larger note and make good their escape
before the staff discovers that he or she has already given back the larger note
to the suspect.
Preliminary investigations indicated that they are believed to be responsible
for at least 13 cases. A joint task force comprising officers from the Divisions
involved with the support of the Police Intelligence Division was set up to look
into the matter. Following extensive enquiries and follow-up investigations, on
Sat (3 Nov), 9.00pm, the officers raided a hotel located in Geylang area and
arrested the five suspects. Cash amounting to about S$10,000 in various
currencies were recovered.
The five suspects will be charged in Courts today (5 Nov) for an offence
Theft with Common Intention, under Section 379 read with Section 34 of the Penal
Code, Chapter 224. This offence carries a punishment of a jail term which may
extend to 3 years, or with fine of both.
Commander of Central Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police
Daniel Tan, and Commander of Tanglin Police Division, Deputy Assistant
Commissioner of Police Lu Yeow Lim, commended their officers for their swift
investigative follow-up which resulted in the successful arrest of the five
suspects.
