Neither. How cruel it is depends on how the creature is killed (and raise) and how long it has to endure the pain. To most urban folk, the sight of any animal being slaughtered is not pleasant, even common food animals like chicken, pigs, or even fish for that matter. What is considered regular fare some place may be viewed as taboo somewhere else. Eg. you can kill and eat dog, as long as that doggie not mine. If eating animals sound cruel to you, suggest you become vegetarian, it is the most humane way to be.
