More and more people tulan with the restaurant...

Sakae Sushi has been in the media a lot recently with its claimed $3k a month salary for its dishwasher position. It seems that Sakae sushi is doing very well for itself if it could be paying such high salaries.

Well, Sakae Sushi must be doing well as the boss told interviewers that he is planning to expand to North Korea!

However, all this ‘success’ also comes with a fair amount of criticism with many Netizens criticizing Sakae Sushi on its recent job ad. After a bit of reading about Sakae Sushi, It seems that the complaints don’t stop there.

Previously, Sakae sushi had taken its business to the U.S. yet, after failing there and claiming bankruptcy they left with many debts and retreated back to Singapore to continue their ‘booming’ business.

In January of 2008 a New York branch was opened in the neighbourhood of Midtown but less than a year later, they closed down. Local review sites about the business show much disappointment. Even worse, correspondence with ex waitresses and waiters revealed that Sakae Sushi left without paying many of their staff.

One of the former waitress claims:

“They owe me about $2700 usd and it keeps adding up since the court decision. It accumulates interest as time goes on.”

A reader shared with us:

My friend worked for Sakae Sushi in New York. Before Sakae Sushi closed down, they issued my friend a paycheck but the paycheck bounced. Her lawyer called Sakae Sushi’s HQ in Singapore and also sent them an email but they didn’t respond…The amount of money is small to Douglas Foo (the owner) but it is big to a lot of people. Most importantly, she worked hard for them and she should get paid.”

it seems that Sakae sushi is cutting costs where possible, escaping debts in the US and creating controversial job ads. What might be next when they move on to other countries?
