Downtown East fatal stabbing case, sentence out

SINGAPORE: Five youths who stabbed and slashed a polytechnic student in a 2010 Downtown East fight have pleaded guilty to culpable homicide and were sentenced on Friday.

In the incident, 19-year-old Darren Ng Wei Jie died from his injuries after being slashed and stabbed with knives, choppers and a screwdriver by a group of more than 10 youths.

The five who were sentenced on Friday are:


Ho Wui Ming, 22, was jailed 11 years, 3 months and sentenced to 10 strokes of the cane
Chen Wei Zhen, 21, was sentenced to 10 years and 10 strokes
Edward Tay Wei Loong, 20, was sentenced to 10 years and 10 strokes
Louis Tong Qing Yao, 17, was sentenced to 8 years and 11 strokes
Stilwell Ong Keat Pin, 20, was sentenced to 12 years and 12 strokes

Ong, believed to be the main culprit, received the stiffest sentence. Prosecutors argued that he had gathered the accused and other accomplices to Downtown East for the confrontation.

Two others also faced separate charges relating to moneylending, theft, and mischief.

Ho faced two other charges for theft and mischief, while Tong faced two moneylending-related charges.

In mitigation, their lawyers said the fight had erupted in the heat of the moment and that the boys were genuinely remorseful.

Seven others linked to the case have earlier been jailed and caned for rioting.

i heard of someone who kanna rotan because of beating someone into coma. the 1st few strokes sent him down with high fever and the canning has to be postponed till he recovered, the scar that was left on the buttock was forever a true scar. and the best part was the canning done by the prison warden was so precise that there is only one stroke of line on his buttocks.

sounds scary and if you think getting into a fight is heroic, i bet these boys will be forever remorseful...

No caning in installments, if medically cannot take it halfway then no more...but have to be certify by baba (prison term for doctor).
Also the skill of the caner is make sure that no 2 strokes land on same spot if not your buttocks will be cut deep...they are skillful enough to line them up side by side but of course they do miss and if 2 strokes land on same spot then the pain is unbearable.
The scars never heal that is true, many say because cane is dip in chemicals beforehand but it's bullshit....only dip in water to prevent the rattan from splitting.

How I know all this? Because when I was in prison I was in charge of setting up everything for the caning session.

Those SPEAR farkers also got this technique of of doin a few stylo Kung Fu like steps before executing the cane..

Most inmates after kena caning would head to their cells and break Panadol tablets into small pieces and paste it on to their injured buttocks.. Some fellow inmates would also take the initiative to fan the butts of these affected chaps to fasten their recuperation period.. Sleeping during the nite is one big problem for those who kena rotan earlier in the day.. Many would sleep sideways and most of them feel feverish during the nite due to the pain on their backsides.. It takes a least one month to recover from the whipping..

I witnessed a mass caning session before when 50 over IIs ( Illegal Immigrants ) kena rotan.. Shouts of '' Ah Ma, Ah Ma '' can be heard inside a DRC workshop thru out the canning sessions..

A chap that I knew back then was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment.. When he was released, he was shocked to see many people using HPs.. He didn't know how to use a VCD player, the Internet, didn't know how to pay his bus fares using EZ Link card.. Took him awhile before getting used to things in Spore again..

Never postponed. It is "it's now or never'. Prison doctor will decide if caning proceeds or halts.

Remorseful? I think you are too optimistic. These boys will continue to boast about their feat even when they are in their 40s! I speak from experience. Know many of these chaps who were incarcerated for serious offences involving caning or even CL. Maybe for every 5, 1 may be remorseful.

Yes Uncle GD you're right.. The Hardcore ones very steady when kena Rotan.. For them the face factor very important to them.. The ones who shouted the most during caning sessions were the YPs (young prisoners), and those who kena Rotan for the 1st time..

Respect from other inmates would also given to any inmate who assaulted a Prison Officer, the higher the rank of the Officer assaulted, the more fame the inmate would receive from his fellow inmates..
