SINGAPORE - Minister of Parliament (MP) Dr Janil Puthucheary said that two of his constituents were unhappy with him over his honesty with them.

In an online post on his Facebook profile, Dr Puthucheary said a couple had approached him during a meet-the-people session to assist them in an appeal.

He did not reveal what the appeal was for.

The MP for Pasir Ris-Puggol GRC had agreed to help write a letter on the couple's behalf but explained that he believed there was little chance of their appeal being successful.

He said he did this as he did not "want to give them too much false hope".

"They got quite angry and upset, and claimed that I had rejected their position and that I had the 'wrong attitude'. In the end they left and didn't want me to write a letter of appeal," said MP Puthucheary, who is also the Grassroots Adviser to Pasir Ris-Punggol Grassroots Organisations.

Responding to the situation, he said he was struck by the couple's insistence that he should not have been so complete in his honesty.

He said that the couple felt that he should not have shared his experience with similar appeals and they would rather have him give them more hope rather than tell them the truth.

"I find this hard to reconcile with what I see as my responsibility to engage the public in a meaningful way," he added.

"Surely you want to trust your MP to tell you the truth and to tell you what he knows that's relevant to the situation? Not just say 'Yes everything will be ok', even if he knows that isn't so? What do you think? Can there be too much honesty and transparency?" he wrote on his Facebook.

In closing his online post he revealed there were several successes in appeals "this week" and thanked volunteers and activists "who give selflessly of their time and effort".

This guy really something : Beat around the bush just to self-praise.

PAP also very unhappy when citizens are very honest with them.
They will create GRCs, redraw electoral boundaries and undermine oppositions.
It cuts both ways.

Depends on how and what the context he said it. The correct tone based on the situation can result in managing expectations, while the opposite can result in being deemed as discouraging or unhelpful.

We don't have the full conversation, so we won't know.

However it is rather unusual for people to get angry over being told that their appeal is not 100% guaranteed. It's something anyone would know anyway. So I kind of suspect that he and his grassroots people overdid it.

This fucktard is like the 154, reporting only 1 part of it and leaving out the rest.

Who knows what really happened during the MPS?

a honest member of parliament - that's an oxymoron when i see one

This guy abandoned Malaysia to come to Spore.. Then he cleverly avoided NS..

Made a ridiculous claim that by serving at a kiddy Hospital, he was already doin a National Service to this Country..

Rode on the coattails of TCH to get himself into Parliament..

Can trust this man meh..????

The truth is we all want our civil servants, our MPs and our govt to be objective, neutral, and play by the law - no favouritism, no bending of rules thru networking & connections..

This is the trouble with Singaporeans. They want a system that is not corrupt but we complain or are not happy if we want to make it stay that way.

So in this respect, what he has done is not wrong, if he got your appeal accepted at the expense of other Singaporeans or other parties more directly.

Having said that, next time dont vote for PAP anymore since they cannot help you. A WP MP or any other party will do just as well. At least, on a national level, you may get to reduce the PAP dominance in Parliament which helps everybody.

On a personal level, this Janil guy is useless as an MP. He plays too safe.

It's amazing what carrying balls can help one accomplish.

Looking at his photo, I think more likely the couple are put off by his 'xia-lan' attitude than by his 'honestly'.

Lackey Puthu-neh-neh is a deep one.

He know the correct type of loyalty and honest will get him far. For example, the Chink Red Guards denounced their parents as counter-revolutionaries to get ahead. Lackey Puthu-neh-neh slimes his papa as a Commie agitator and kowtow Old Autocrat+Ruler Loong to be a well paid lackey.

He is mean and honest to his peasants but like a smooth neh, only have praises and flattery for Ruler Loong! The X'tian Satan will love this Puthu-neh-neh

To paraphase what Duke of Punggol may ask in this instance...'what do you think?'
