It has been almost close to a month since MOM alerted all entertainment joints on its new policy. From Oct or Nov 2012 onwards, all outlets will only get to hire 8 performing artistes regardless of size of joint. It used to be 15 for the bigger ones and 8-10 for the smaller ones. This new policy is supposedly meant to cut back on our dependence on foreigners. In this case, WP holders.

Bosses of these joints met MOM officials twice to highlight their grievances. Not likely for MOM to reverse its policy. Bosses of bigger joints fail to understand how MOM could arrive at a decision whereby bigger and more established joints are penalised while smaller joints are less affected.

Imo, I think MOM got it all wrong. Why cut back on the number of foreigners in an industry where no locals are keen on? Might as well slashed the number of foreigners in the blue collar industries.

They are trying to save their 2016 skin.

They are cutting across the entire FT quota and the hard target is by end 2014. Nothing to do with if locals are keen to enter or not. It is to bring down the overall FT numbers so that there is clear visual and tangible difference that can seen by the locals in their everyday interaction. Everyone is impacted. The dependents are also impacted. The main date of the major revisions was yesterday. The cut ranges from 20% all the way to 65% in some sectors.

There is a genuine believe amongst some that employers will start calling up Ah Laus in due time.

The authorities plan to go after seedy side of Singapore for FTs sometime next year.
