SINGAPORE: Law and Foreign Affairs Minister K Shanmugam said he has noticed more unsafe driving on Singapore roads. Writing on his Facebook page, Mr Shanmugam commented on his experience on the roads on Monday.

He cited two incidents, where drivers almost caused accidents because they did not indicate before switching lanes.

Mr Shanmugam also cited one incident where his wife, who was driving, indicated to switch lanes but a lorry deliberately moved much faster to prevent them from pulling into the lane.

The post also garnered dozens of comments within minutes on the Channel NewsAsia Facebook page. Some have suggested deploying more Traffic Police officers on the roads, to tackle bad drivers.

SINGAPORE - It was a short Facebook post about three road encounters that he and his wife had had yesterday. But within four hours, Law Minister K Shanmugam's post had drawn more than 100 lively comments, which overwhelmingly agreed with his observation about an "increased amount of unsafe driving on our roads".

In one incident, Mr Shanmugam's wife, who was driving, wanted to change lanes and signalled, but a van behind sped up so they could not do so. "I wonder if it is the case that we are simply noticing this more, or if our driving habits have become worse," he mused.

That provoked a litany of gripes from netizens - about drivers tailgating, not signalling early when filtering, using high-beam headlights, not giving way to pedestrians or cyclists, poor standards of driving instructors and more.

A number observed that there seemed to be fewer enforcement patrols on the roads and called for these to be stepped up. Others asked for heavy penalties for errant drivers or a review of speed limits for goods vehicles.

Responding to some of the comments, Mr Shanmugam noted that, contrary to belief that ministers have official drivers, they actually drive their own cars. As to those who suggested foreign drivers could be at fault, he said he was "pretty sure" that, in two of his three encounters, the drivers were local.

Sinkie drivers have never been any good. Way back in the 80s when the expressways were free flowing, I used to come across taxi drivers, aunties, merc drivers and overall blur fucks doing 80kph in the overtaking lane and no amount horn blasting, light flashing and tailgating could persuade them to move over so I could pass.

I simply could not understand why they had to use the extreme right lane when the others two lanes were available.

We once had a German sales rep over and he said that this sort of road hogging would cop a huge fine in Germany as it was more dangerous than speeding. That's why it hardly ever happened back home.

Ultimately, it boils down to education and enforcement. In Singapore, there is neither.

Ultimately, it boils down to education and enforcement. In Singapore, there is neither.

other road users can do their part to educate the inconsiderate drivers. this usually involves overtaking on the left, followed by jamming on the brakes and then flooring the accelerator.

I'm surprised he met these kind of incidents.
Solution: Ask TP to clear all traffics (including cyclists), for all PAP MPs and Ministers, while they are on the road.

hello, boss sam, chances of overtaking another vehicle and go on the right lane will pose less risk of an accident. you should try 80km/hr following few cars behind another on the expressway. it will get you into an accident easily especially when it's raining.
