A classic picture. Can't do this is digital DSLR unless photoshop the clouds for details.

Anyway the cyclist got himself to blame, riding at 6.55 am when other drivers are still sleepy and probably hogging an entire lane cycling 2 abreast. Even on motorcycle I fear for my own life when going along the same stretch of road the cyclist died on.

In this image, you can actually see a couple of cyclists using the bike paths....

I had this vision that by the 21st century, ALL roads in Singapore would be built this way. I was sadly mistaken.

When Nicoll Highway was first built, the designers incorporated a cycle lane and a pedestrian footpath. All of us who cycled in those days (mid 60s) were only too happy to use the bike path as we were safe from the cars and sinkie pedestrians kept to the footpath.

Here's the photographic evidence. I must have cycled along this route more than 3000 times on the way to school and back.

Many of these cyclists use the road, demand equal treatment like all vehicles on road. But when come to red lights, never stop.... i fail to see the logic...

as a cyclist, i do stop at red lights, but i fully agree with you on the above.. most of the voices you hear demanding equal treatment by road users are the ones who have no respect for traffic rules . they feel that traffic rules don't apply to cyclists...

cyclist do not need protection, they are a traffic hazard n should bear 100% responsibility for any accidents

I think there is a lot of Truth to what you say. Last year, during Rush Hour, I saw a bicyclist shoot out from a side lane into the big 4-lane road beside Robinson House/Ocean Building on Shenton Way(roughly near where AIA insurance is). The bloody idiot shot perpendicularly through 4 lanes without looking out for traffic.......and you can only imagine how much traffic there is along that Raffles Place main road. About 50 cars had to jam brake and swerve to avoid him. I cannot figure out how they avoided a 50-car pile up. Would've made the Headlines the next morning!

Incidentally, the cyclist was a middle-aged Sinkie chinese. Looked like a janitor or building maintenance man from one of the office buildings.

im not siding the tiong but if you see the cyclist riding to the changi beach area, they hogging one lane in a 2 lane road as if their grandfather road.
last i worked in cargo complex, i witnessed most cyclist has no regards of the heavy vehicle traffic travelling.

I ride a bicycle, too, but not often since the weather is so hot. When I cycle, I pick a time when few people are out walking on the pedestrian walkways, and I cycle on the walkways. So, you will not find my Next-of-Kin writing sissy Sob Letters to the Ministers.

The pair of lions known as merdeka lions...
Merdeka has no meaning within an absolute monarchy.

Where are they now? in the past people used to take pictures with them lions? I still remember the Municipal logo, the coconut tree with the was it a tiger or lion at the foot, that is on the plaque !! at the foot of the lion statues....SINgapore no longer, have the strength to shout , MERDEKA! ( no more balls). You shout that at National Day , they will clap your mouth & clamp whatever 'balls' one have!! it is now "MALULAH"!!

Thank you for the reminder that sinkieland is still a third world third rate cuntry....

While that has an element of truth, how, from an engineering point of view are you going to redesign and modify the present road system to accomodate these 45 kmh kamikaze cyclists born of a trend that started about a decade ago? Pay and Pay will pay? And remember we are not talking about kids cycling on bicycle footpaths.

What a nice picture of Peesai when it was still beautiful. Where you see the sky and the horizon meet, no tall buildings, lots of space, uncongested. In the name of economic progress, we've ruined her tranquil scenic charm.

Cheers!

I absolutely loved the Singapore I grew up in. It was perfection on earth. The joys of simple, stress free living were better than the so called entertainment derived from the fancy technology of today.

My perfect day consisted of :

1. Cycling to school and stopping off for Teh Tarek and Nasi Lemak/Epok at the serabat stall at the end of Joo Chiat Rd next to the sea.

2. Half a day of chickenshit classes.

3. Cycle to lunch at Waterloo St or Newton Circus or Tiong Bahru or Rex back lane (cycling gave us the freedom to pick and choose)

4. Football or catch fighting fish / guppies in the drains leading into Bukit Timah Canal.

5. Cycle home in time for dinner in order to avoid caning.

I agree. My childhood days in Sg were the greatest. Carefree is the best word to describe it. Unlike my nephews and nieces, classes, homework, tuition. Even to swim, play soccer or tennis, they attend classes! WTF? School holidays then, it was RTS (Roam The Streets), sharpening our slingshot skills, stayover at cousins' place. Not at all envious of today's kids despite the material wealth, overseas trips, fancy gadgets, etc.

Cheers!
