Unfortunately LKY hijacked Spore to put in place a totalitarian state. For a model of a democracy you'll have to look at the 1st world like Canada. A favourite among those who want to give up their red IC.
Many in the 1st world will know that the truth lies somewhere between the 2 extreme viewpoints. FYI there are many parties in Canada e.g. social parties, communist party, etc

I once asked a Canadian why he voted for one part for the federal elections & another party for provincial elections. His answer showed why they won't have a problem maintaining a democracy. He did that to prevent any one party from holding a monopoly. They also have term limits for the maximum number of terms a PM can hang on to power. If you want to preserve a democracy, you need an informed populace.

Incidentally, I am in Happy National Day mood, here in Australia. So I pop into a shop to speak to the Chinese PRC shopkeeper about Singapore Olympic achievement. Well, he thought the winners on my phone pic look like Chinese mainlanders. Even the names are so China ..... I told him that he is mistaken, they are Singaporeans, I get the feeling that he is laughing at me. But good thing I have got a thick hide, and I know he will not remember me the next time I visit his shop.

Sports is a huge foreign relations exercise for nations these days. Countries spend billions of dollars on infrastructure and training programs to win medals in prestigious international competitions. The difference is while other countries focus on developing their grassroots and grooming local athletes, Singapore chooses the easier route of importing 'instant' talent to do the trick.

Blame it on old fart's pragmatist philosophy, and his obsession with GDP growth as a yardstick of success. He once famously said that sports do not contribute to a nation's GDP.

That's that. That's why we are fucking pathetic when it comes to sports. How long do we have to keep on buying foreign talent to keep the medals mill running, since most athletes have a short competitive lifespan of just 2 to 3 Olympics? If money had been invested on developing local talent and instilling a true sporting culture in our schools instead, we'd have a constant supply of young talent coming out from the ground, some of whom could be groomed into world class athletes.
